I know....I know....lips are sealed. And I'm the first to stomp someone for divulging secrets in my backyard. But on the other hand I can appreciate a guy trying to get a little solitude in a new area....maybe you guys can too. <BR> <BR>With that said. I'm looking for a little info on backcountry oppurtunities in the Sunday River/Bethel area. Even just a hint/clue/nudge would be welcome. I'll be working in the area off and on this winter and want to maximize the my time off. <BR> <BR>I'm fairly versitile off piste and will tele, split-board, snowshoe, or XC as needed so any recomendations are welcome. Just a suggestion for you Cliff... I don't have infos about this, but I think you would have more chances to get an answer, giving an e-mail address, cause people wouldn't put some super stuff on a website viewed by thousands of persons, I think... <BR> <BR>I hope you'll find some good spots <IMG SRC="http://www.firsttracksonline.com/discus2/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":)">
 
In truth, I don't know of any skiing up there, but if you like tight trees I'm sure there's probably something on either side of the road in Grafton Notch. Baldpate or Old Speck. I'd suspect the better skiing would be lower down where there are hardwoods. I've never looked at the terrain with a skiing eye while hiking in there though. Sorry.

Again, I know secrets are well guarded, especially in a little town like Bethel. But maybe you all have some good ideas to get me started. <BR>Thanks
 
Heading out of bethel, take the road towards errol that will lead past lake umbagog, there are many side roads off of that road that will lead to grafton notch, just look around plenty to do <BR>porter
 
Yes, pick up (or flip through in a local bookstore) David Goodman's book titled Backcountry Skiing Adventures (or something of the sort) for NH and Maine. I've got the second one he put out that has VT and NY backcountry routes and skiing. <BR> <BR>-Scott
 
Effectively, there is something near Bethel in the book of David Goodman : here is the entire title : Backcountry Skiing adventures : Classic ski and snowboard tours in Maine and New Hampshire. <BR> <BR>Personnaly, I have the one of NH/ME, but not the one of VT/NY.
 
According to Goodman's book tour #26: Rumford Whitecap <BR>Vertical drop: 1,557 feet <BR>Difficulty: More difficult <BR>Distance: 5.2 or 4.0 miles round-trip depending from where you start. <BR> <BR>Find the book if you want more info.
 
And don't forget to stop before you ski over the cliff. <BR> <BR>(I had forgotten about that mountain, really, I had...)
