Bird/Alta 12/9

Another good day. Chilly, and low density snow. In places it covered rocks and bumps well, in others it didn't

Had a few great runs down the cirque and Gad 2, and then some under the key hole.

Went over to Alta for two runs in the afternoon. Had the first chute in glory hole with no tracks in it, at 3 pm. Pretty good stuff, deepest run of the day.

I said good not great. This weekend should be great though.

Hey - I've been through my share of knee problems, you'll get better in no time.

I may well be out this weekend depending on what the doc says tomorrow. It comes and goes -- sometimes (like this morning) it's really annoying, other times (like right now) I barely notice that it's there and almost feel guilty for keeping tomorrow's appointment.

Back during your manly days on the Jay Peak patrol, you would've skied on that knee, and loved it!
:ski:

Guess I've just gone soft.

I've never had a real true knee injury, but I've always known that my knees are vulnerable. I can just feel it.

I swear tele helps. I think it builds up the muscles around my knees and makes them stronger.

Dr. Harv recommends Tele.

Get well man.

EDIT: I just read the whole 12/6 thread and watched the video...in the above comment I just assumed it was a usage injury not a crash. So...I recant my recommendation...that kind of crash on a (non-releasable) tele binding is death.

Not sure if I missed it...did you ski down?

I've either got to stay out of here altogether (Western side) or pay closer attention I guess.

I would say today was real good. Not great, but best day of my season so far minus the Nov 4 storm before Alta opened. Here is a picture of my first tracks down Backside.

geeze, you'd think that at a place like alta, skiers would be better farmers, make nicer turns for nicer tracks and leave some room for others. not picking on your tracks as i don't know which ones they are, but what friggin scribbles some folks are making and then there's that all over the place track that forces many to cross it to keep a line. there is an ettiquette to powder skiing, it should be written on the back of the lift tickets there. looked like a nice day and backside is a nice ride.

yeesh, aren't you the ski police.

there's no way to control people...they will do what they want. If you aren't first, then you just get what's left.

the beauty about skiing is that you are free to ski (almost) wherever you want and make whatever kind of turns you want and there is no ski gestapo regulating your turns or your direction.

ski police no. but, real powder skiers know the ettiquette, leave some room for the next guy/girl or yourself. skiing has become so, "just ski down", there's so much less heart/soul and thought that goes into it. not trying to regulate, just an observation and don't tell me that if you got to backside 2nd , 3rd or 4th that you wouldn't prefer an open lane for yer turns from t2b. and people wonder how a place like alta's open expanses get tracked so fast. i know my example is not at a resort, but this is good powder skiing. no, i didn't make the observers left tracks.

You must be REALLY REALLY bored...

Oh yeah and yesterday was good... I agree with Salida. I wish the snow was slightly denser, but snow is snow and it was nice.

Rode wildcat most of the morning. Few runs off Collins. Had many many untracked lines through Wildcat trees out by the Westward ho gate...little bit of a "duck walk" out, but well worth it.

this weekend should be good. I won't be out til sunday likely though.

See you all up there.!!!!

Woot Woot!

Personally, I enjoy going a bit faster while skiing powder and thats just not really possible making those tight turns. There was a time when I enjoyed farming out a slope, on a powder day at Alta its just not worth it though. Things get skied out so fast at Alta I'm of the mind set to ski your line however you want and love every minute of it, because by the time you get back your tracks whether they are perfect figure eights or straight lining are going to be chewed up pretty good. Thats just my personal opinion.

When the farm turns into a long rowed harvest then the rules will be easier to follow. Until the masses upsize from their 171 'fat' skis, I doubt that will happen.

do you think that there was ever a time when the general masses were considerate to the degree you speak? Maybe once in a while, but overal...I think not.

You cannot control people or change people, they will always do what they want. It is nice when people are educated to be considerate, but it is nearly impossible to expect that of any large group.

Actually, all the lines in that photo are pretty much straight down the fall line, equal on right and left sides. Even the one you're complaining about - "that all over the place track" - is straight and very narrow with the exception of the final left turn, which would be shedding massive speed, and is arcing onto the patrol-set backside traverse. Also, all of those lines originated in High Notch - much trajectory was determined by the rocks still lurking. It may look like February, but there are just a ton of surprises where you least expect them. In short, for those skiers, for that area on the hill, for the current conditions, your ski-police criticisms are pretty far off the mark.

Yep. I think the problem of multiple traverse lines - particularly the Saddle Traverse, Ballroom/Shoulder, and the Backside traverse - is a far bigger issue and annoyance than a somewhat erratic line.

But it's Alta - it is what it is. Be among the first 20 at the rope drop on High Notch and you have an untracked line. Go back for a second run and it's chowder. Same deal with Ballroom and Baldy Shoulder. Even next door at the Bird, it's shocking how fast the vast acreage of Mineral Basin gets totaled.
