skied WV on tues and loon on wed ... none of that matters now i suppose.
Bretton on Thurs....Why?....it's a legit question

1) reports of projected winds had us concerned... just couldn't see the point in going anywhere.. even across the street to loon ( which got thier usual half of what most others got  ) , if the resort was not spinning ( and from what i'm reading on this board, we made the right call)
2) bretton gets snow.. it just does
3) sitting on 2 free tickets... couldn't really imagine actually making a decision to go to bretton woods on any old normal day... but as anyone who was up north on wed and thurs knows.. it was not a normal day

we considered going to wildcat.. that was the first option but we played it conservative and decided to use the free tickets....jay peak and whatever phony snow total they claimed was out , as anyone with any common sense knew they would be wind affected  and probably would not be spinning...along with just about every other place so as not to pick on jay, so i think we picked right...if anyone hit stowe , or wildcat, i would really like to hear it first hand if they really were spinning just for info purposes... but unless i get it first hand, i think we guessed right...
did it have the steepest lines?.. no , of course not... what it did have was a legit 25 inches and up to 35 pockets in the trees.. the place was empty and every lift spun every second of the day... as they are fond of saying " wind was not a factor "....we had 4 different tree lines of about 800 feet of vert that we ( and about 5 other legit skiers ) worked all day... surprisingly they left just about 90% of the non trees ungroomed...they had so much snow , it was almost impossible to ski the regular blues they have as they are too flat to have enough momentum... even it the lightest powder i think i have ever skied!!!!
it's bretton woods... it will be back to the barely bearable flat ant hill it is next week, but for one day, and one free day have you, it was surreal... best day in over three years
:P

"Wind was not a factor" Thursday at Cannon. Well it did get a bit gusty in the afternoon but not enough to force any holds.

When trying to decide where to go that day I noticed the Cannon site said not to worry about the forecast for wind because supposedly they don't get hit hard by northwesterlies. The wind actually was forecast to be from the west but I thought that was a mighty big claim in any case ... but it wound up being true, on Thursday at least.

MikeM, i think what Cannon meant by "wind will not be a factor" is that it would not effect their lift operation. cannon is a very windy mountain, but it is pretty rare they need to shut things down due to wind.

I was surprised how little actual wind there was at Cannon on Thursday. As I say, it got windier in the afternoon and certain trails/parts of the mountain were more prone to being blasted than other parts, but overall there was a lot less wind than I'd expected from the forecasts. In fact on the drive up it was quite gusty through central NH but it actually seemed calmer up in the Notch.

Good to see you were out enjoying the skiing Joe.

I'm just catching up on some FTO reading.

I was at Smuggs on Thursday, Madonna lift spun for maybe 30 minutes. You might have read it in Hamdog's report, but we were fortunate to have the right timing for one ride to the top. It was a hell of an experience.

I've been waiting years to see a powder report from joegm. Congratulations! Maybe it will dump at Bretton Woods next March...
