Burke Mountain, VT: 03/02/07

After an aborted Cannon Mountain attempt, which blew away in the 50 MPH winds, Sledhaulingmedic, NHPH, NHPH's friend, and I went with the next closest best option with the least likely chance of wind hold: Burke. Why I even thought Cannon would be open is beyond me. I was just so pumped up to be skiing Cannon at its prime with fresh snow... rather blind not to expect winds blowning south to north to knock Cannon off line. NHPH heard rumor that even BW stopped some lifts during the day?

We got going at Burke around 10 A.M. after working out the logistics. The Willoughby Quad was turning when we got there but we were warned it was being shut down soon. We got three excellent runs off the summit, including Willoughby, Doug's Drop into Little Chief, and East Bowl before the plug was pulled. East Bowl was fantastic but it was hard to get up much speed with the nice and dense powder. Of course, the traverse back was brutal, but I had to show off Burke's signature trail. The Poma lift was more than adequate for our needs (YEY FOR SURFACE LIFTS ON A WINDY DAY, THANK YA VERY MUCH!).

Hard call on the snow totals. The open slopes generally had about 6" with more along the edges. Up to a foot in some spots, so I might put the end of day total at 8-10" for the 24 hour period of snow fall including this afternoon. Woods shots were generally a foot deep, sometimes deeper in drifts and an amazing above the knee deep in the slot, which will probably be filled back in by tomorrow morning for from_the_NEK.

After some more woods action we grabbed some lunch at the lodge. Nice snow on Fox's, Ledges, Bear Den, etc. Bravo. Excellent loose powder after it got chewed up, still lots of Pow on Fox's. Ledges are in the best shape I have ever seen them with awesome jumps and hucks from the snow making whales.

After lunch, a HUGE wind picked up blowing east to west. BIg Dipper was picked clean and, as we learned the hard way, the east bowl glades got the snow completely lifted out of the trees with exception of the bottom 100-200 vertical feet. We took Cave Man since we could not reach Dixie. It was rough going with no fresh snow and a firm base. Bad call on my part but the bottom of the glades looked excellent on the way back. Evidence of the high wind was visible on the traverse with lots of sticks, pine needles, and small downed branches that were not their earlier in the morning.

We kicked it over to some trees and Little Dipper for some late day untracked in the less obvious spots and finished up with several runs down Bear Den, Ledges, and Warren's on a variety of conditions including powder, loose powder, chopped up powder, powder, wind blown powder, crud, packed powder, and powder. A mixed bag, but a nice mixed bag. This snow made you work. Very similar to the dense V Day snow storm in terms of consistency, quality, and density.

It was a great warm up for the weekend. Very very little sleet, off and on snow of variable consistency throughout the day with snow still falling when we left. Burke should be skiing very well this weekend. Pictures to follow later tonight.

With powderfreak's predicted warm air encroaching upon this storm from the south, I would think you would have wanted to head north (Burke) instead of south (Cannon) in any case.

On average Cannon is SO like Baldy as I read these reports over the years. It doesn't matter how good the terrain is if it's not covered, or if the snow is crap. But I guess we all enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out when it will be good.

In reference to the storm and direction of travel, the main blast of the storm was the White Mountains, not the Green Mountains. Cannon was on the north western edge of the Jackpot region, so it was a roll of the dice. Snow totals rolling in from Wildcat to Sunday River appear highest so far (Killington's claim is dubious at best considering what its neighbors reported). Cannon is definitely benefiting from more snow than Burke as Cannon was closer to the major snow belt and Burke is not going to benefit from the Spine wrap around. Jay was an obvious wind hold no go.

I think the major challenge for deciding where to go after a storm is deciding where not to go rather than targeting the bullseye (case in point). Does not matter how much snow a mountain picks up if the lifts do not turn.

Who actually turned lifts today? That is what I want to know. Who turned lifts and who had a respectable majority of terrain open? Burke is always an excellent choice on high wind days due to its location, face direction, and Poma option.

Wildcat's snow report said the quad was still running at 11:30.

Also, about Cannon. I bet they got a bunch of sleet today. That notch is crazy.

Also, even though Killington is over reporting I don't think it is that bad. They just got more precip than areas to the north. Sunapee and Ragged got 14-16. My bet is Cardigan is the jackpot with 18 inches. Sounds tempting...

actually, compared to Burke, Cannon had more snow in their parking lot. and it was snowing not sleeting when i was there at 8:30a. but, yea. who knows what it was doing at the summit.

Phenomenal day skiing with some great guys! Thanks again Riv for a personalized tour of the gem named Burke.

It was my first time there and I was really impressed. It reminded me of Wildcat alot. All the trails had lots of character and they seemed to hold snow verey well. I will definately be back.

Rivercoil's report was spot on and I cant think of anything else significant to add other than I spun my truck out on black ice less than a mile from my house #-o . No significant damage from blasting through a snowbank other than a hurt ego.

Great pictures Riv! I'm a bit sore today but it hurts so good! :D

NHPH, Dave filled me in on the spin out, glad no one was hurt! Always glad to make some turns with you and the Sledhaulder. And just think I was taking it easy on you guys ;) You'll have to come back up for the full tour, especially when the Willoughby Quad is spinning all day :D

Burke was the better choice for yesterday. Cannon did not retain much snow following the wind, so just as well it was closed and had us going to Burke. But still an awesome day today skiing some of my favorite terrain. Dave can fill you in on the details when you see him next... I didn't beat him up too badly but he got a little  going down Tram Line today. Honestly, so did I. Really should not be open, but that is not a complaint!

I was watching certain condition reports pretty closely yesterday while trying to plot future moves and yes BW had wind holds; in fact they didn't stay open for night skiing and by day's end they upped this from 5 at their site:

Wind is not a factor at Bretton Woods! Wind has affected lift operation only 6 out of 4205 days.

I should have taken notes but from memory, Saddleback was closed and Sunday River had significant wind holds. I don't think I checked the Wildcat site in the afternoon so not sure what transpired there but I'm pretty sure they were open to the top in the morning. In VT Sunnyside spun at MRG for a while in the morning, then went on hold, and the single was on hold all day; Sugarbush also had major holds.

Anyway, I decided not to battle the weekend warriors and instead will hit MRG Monday. Hoping for at least a little fresh terrain-induced ...

Nice to see a report from friday. I was at Burke for the first time thurs the 1st and we had a great day. Sunny skies, no wind, no crowds. We started the day with some of the groomers they're known for and were blown away! Can't remember all the names but I think Big Dipper was our favorite of the cordouroy. With NO people there early we let em loose and hauled down these perfect runs laughing all the way.
We also hit the east bowl glades, Dixiland, Caveman, etc... The glades we're very scratched up as to be expected this long after a storm but we had a blast anyways making our way down through the trees. To skiiers left there is the birches and a deeper glade i can't remember the name of but we actually found some untouched(although heavy) pockets of snow in there. How nice it would of been with just a couple inches on top!
We thouroughly enjoyed Burke and will be back. Also some great views of Mansfield and Jay and the gap.

It is good to hear that you were able to hit the Slot. Did you ski it top to bottom? At this point it is probably fairly obvious where the entry point is since I'm sure there are a bunch of tracks leading into what initially looks like nothing :D
Unfortunately I was in Florida all of last week and this past weekend so I missed the new snow. I'm not completely sure what my plans are for next weekend. I'm leaning toward Jay or Sugarbush for one of the days.
