One year ago today, after a half-foot of natural snow and 4-5 nights of cold temps for snowmaking, Killington opened, and I was skiing top to bottom.

One year later, I'm skiing Cannon top to bottom, only hiking for it because there's not a lift running anywhere in New England. Mount Washington has received almost twice the average October snowfall (13.8" avg., 26.5" this month).

I guess the several thousand skiers and riders who showed up October 25, 2002 and paid $35 for a day ticket were not enough to convince Killington to do it again this year.

The weather conditions this week were nearly identical to 2002, with four nights below freezing, and snowfall on three of those. SOME ski area could have opened a lift. No offense to Tenney, I appreciate what they're trying to do, but I'm not gonna drive 45 minutes south to pay to hike and ski a park.

Oh well, the temperatures were rising and the snow was getting sticky when I left Cannon at 1PM. The rain is headed this way from Frankontour. This snow cover may not last long, but it was a welcome blessing, since we obviously can't count on Kmart to make any before Veterans Day.
