im a cannon regular, however i have never skied the tuckerbrook trail. can someone give me some info on where it is exactly, where it leads, what terrain it features. ill give you my private e mail address if you would rather not post it public. thanks.

I'm not an expert having done it once ten or twelve years ago. Tuckerbrook is not a big dark secret as the particulars for this trail appears in Goodman's Book. You will need to stash a car in Franconia to get back to Cannon. The entrance is well on the skiers left of the Taft Slalom as you head down to the top of the old Mittersill lifts in a clump of evergreens after the hike up the knob. This part of Cannon is a snow magnet, but decent snow coverage is required.

is it the steep looking chute that drops skiers left off of taft slalom? or is that a different run altogether. thanks.

i'd like to be in to, i snowshoed up it earlier in the year, and it looks pretty good
porter

The top of Tuckerbrook is narrow but the trail open up once you get further away from the Taft. Be sure to spot a car as this trail ends up in the middle of no where.

I'd love to do this again, but don't make it to Cannon bet once a year these days.

I'm with T-Man, only get there very randomly. Didn't even make it last year. Lotta snow locally in Vt. My one run in T-Brook was epic however. Barely remember where to spot the vehicle. Everytime I go I'm always looking for someone to set shuttle with. Cannon, it's a blast!

BTW, technically, the in-bounds trail on Cannon is named "Taft Slalom". The o-b trail on Mittersill, over the saddle and down Mt Jackson to the top of the old Mittersill chair has been historically known as the "Taft Race Course", though these days you usually get a blank stare when you mention the latter.

I asked a fellow how Mittersill was on Sunday, when I met him skinning up Taft Slalom (I'd ducked rope to check out the very thin cover). He said the bottom half of Mittersill was thin, but the top half was OK. I said, "yeah, I bet the Taft Race Course is good", and he obviously had no idea what I was talking about.

Refering to that minor peak on the ridge north of Cannon as "Mt Jackson" is also rarely used. It's one of those beautiful New Hampshire place names with more than one location. These days, most people immediately think of the 4000 footer near Crawford Notch/Mizpah/MtWebster, and wonder how you skied there.

Taft Race Course was the original trail on Mittersill, before the Tram was built, and long before the Mittersill lifts and trail network was built. I once asked Bert Herbert if he remembered which route it took down Mittersill, as the original Taft route has been obscured by the newer Mittersill trail network. He could not recall, but said that as a boy, they used to ski all the way back to town.

One of these years I'd like to try to re-trace and map it's original course.

thanks for the info, ill keep you posted next time im planning on going up. where do you leave a car, what town? any possiblitity of thumbing it back or is it to remote? thanks

Get Dave Goodman's "BACKCOUNTRY SKIING ADVENTURES Classic Ski and Snowboard Tours in Maine and New Hampshire". It has perfect directions on where to leave a car, and perfect directions on how to ski right down to it. Tuckerbrook intersects with the Franconia x-c trail network, which gets you out of there really well.

Ya the goodman book definatley explains where the trail is and where to leave your car. The roads officals name is wells road. The trails is labeled where you would leave your car

A-non makes a good point. If you've got AT gear & skins, or tele gear, you can ski back up to Mittersill & Cannon via the X-C trail network; usually takes me 1hr15min to get back to Peabody from the bottom of Tuckerbrook. It's a nice ski tour (but a car ride is always nice, too!).

A friend and I did TBT a few years ago and had a blast. I boarded and he skiied w/ alpine gear. Run was good, with a fallen tree in the middle to climb over. We shot super 8 film of ourselves and made a fun home movie. We lucked out at the bottom as we had no car, but a local resident took pity on us and gave us a ride back to cannon. It would have been a long walk otherwise. Haven't been back since, but will go when conditions get better. Hopefully on a Tuesday or Thursday!

One other thing you can do is skin back up Tucker Brook trail; I've done that once or twice. Only problem is that, yes, it is pretty steep.
