Still 50 ski areas should be open this weekend, so go out and ski while still you can.

Here is the definitive list of ski area still open are there possible closing dates. (note: some of these are or will be closed on weekdays).

Order earliest to latest closing (State then Ski Area).

Wow, nice research Patrick. Interesting about Bretton Woods. Obviously last year was not worth it for them staying open late into the season, and even blowing snow right before Bode Day. Also interesting that there really is not much difference between closing dates for most of the major mountains. Most are +/- 1 or 2 weeks with exception of Bush and Kmart.
 
You can put us down for April 22nd as the earliest possible closing for us. 70:30 in favor of the 29th given next week's forecast. Maybe 60:40.
 
Great list , going to look at Alta tomorrow morning to see what difference the foot of snow made as they could not open last week due to loss of snow. You never know could be a good day tomorrow. :lol:

Some research and help from a few websites and forums to fill in the missing gaps. Looks similar to last year when a bunch of them closed at approximately the same time. I believe the latest where something like this:

Ste-Anne, St-Sauveur, Sugarbush: Sunday April 30th
Kmart: Monday May 1st
BWoods: Friday May 5th

Out of the top 5, only St-Sauveur and BWoods seem to aim for an earlier date.

Thanks Steve, how official is that? Is it just a feeling or is it something solid. The April 15th (weather permitting) was apparently mentioned in the Burlington Free Press on March 30th.

That will be impressive. I haven't skied since the epic weekend a few weeks ago. Thought about ending the season after probably the best day of the season but this late arriving snow is making it impossible to quit, still have not had the spring day that I want. Corn snow, sun, and 60 degrees would also be fun.

At least 4-22 is a definite. Looking much better for 4-29 given the weather report I'm holding in my hands for next week.
 
I'm interested to know at what point a ski areas are shooting themselves in the foot, as far as staying open in the spring. I assume it's usually the season pass people who ski late in the season.

Anyone have numbers on this?

:-$ Actually you should read the annual Killington/late season thread in the old FTO archives.

There is an opinion that, yes there are many season passholders, but they might be temped to go elsewhere if the competition's season is longer.

Also in the case of Killington, late in the season, it would start attracting people that normally ski elsewhere during the season.

In the case of Jay Peak, only St-Sauveur might still be open within a 90 minutes drive from Montreal. The next closest are over 2-3 hours away (Stowe, Sugarbush, K, MSA, SR, SL).
 
I suspect not that many regrets. As great as the skiing is now, we know from last week that the base depths are low enough that trail counts will start dropping fast as soon as it gets warm or rains.

We've been over this before in the long Killington threads, but the economics for the late spring are different East and West. Mammoth just looks at what's on the ground, and if it's deep like the last 2 years they go to July 4th. This year they will be lucky to stay alive for a scheduled event the first week of May. The eastern areas only pile up a big natural snowpack in an exceptional year like 2001. Otherwise they have to invest extra $ in snowmaking to stockpile a long lasting base. And there's still a risk that a warm/rainy spring could wipe out that investment.

As I said in the old Killington thread, I believe that its location and topography justify the risk of the stockpile snowmaking, if it's done in the right place and marketed effectively.

Trail count numbers doesn't necessarily mean deteoriation in conditions in the Spring. I don't know what the trails counts were at Tremblant on Easter Monday, but the Edge and Soleil sides were closed. Not for lack of snow, but more for a money saving measure. Tremblant is closing on Sunday, regardless of the incredible conditions the mountain was yesterday (including some natural trails).

I heard last year (not sure from a local) that Mammoth doesn't loss any money when they open in June and have ski camps going. This wouldn't necessarily happened in the East.

Most of the time a ski areas will close due to lack of customers than snow (okay, this might apply more now to the Quebec ski areas). The snowmaking is built up pre-Christmas for the important Holiday period. The problem is that the average skiers's season isn't mirror with what a normal season would be. Ski areas need to make massif snow in the early season, however the snow last well after the average skier in done for the season.

Agree. Tremblant could also do it (climat and population), however I believe that Intrawest did the June skiing once and saw that they wasn't economics basis to extend the season passed the 3rd Sunday of April (regardless of snow).
 
From 50 to 34 ski areas in one weekend, the last week has extended the season of a few areas.

Looks like there will only be 10 areas after this weekend folks. Only Quebec, Maine and Vermont areas have areas planning into making it unto next week, however more snow is in the forecast.

Note: I've remove the ski areas where it was confirm that tomorrow was their last day. However a few like Whiteface aren't mentioning anything about that tomorrow was their initial closing day.

ONE MORE WEEK!!!

Belleayre is expected to receive 30" or more of snow in the next 24 hours.

We will remain open through Sunday, April 22! Only the upper mountain will be open (the Super Chief and the Tomahawk Lifts).
