Got a call from Jay this morning... At 8AM there was at least 1.5H wait to cross the border!

Customs are just ridiculous!

Jay will loose money in the end... That's for sure! Before it was the speed traps and now it's the customs... Jay Peak does not know how to make people feel welcome when the cross the border!

If i were a day skier and i left Montreal at 5:30AM to get the first chair at Jay and when i reach the border i'm slammed w/ 1.5H wait, i'd be pissed! And to top it off, i'm sure the idiot cop is waiting on fresh canadian money just after the border... After all, he needs to justify is salary! How about the people that will try and cross at 9AM... They'll wait 2-3Hours! Wow!

Have a great week-end!

:D

Jay, of course, has no control over border waits. They may be able to try to influence the North Troy situation, and they have tried that, but let's be honest with ourselves here: they have no influence with Homeland Security.

And for all we know, there may have been a reason for heightened attention this morning. We all know that 1.5-hour waits at the Highwater-N. Troy crossing are not the norm. If they were, I'd say go to Frielighsburg instead.

The bottom line is that border security is a by-product of the world that we've been thrust into over the past decade. It is what it is, and we'll have to learn to deal with it.

Agreed with everything Admin stated, especially that Jay has absolutely no control over Customs and the Boarder Crossing folks. Jay has several warnings posted (including in the lunch lines of all places) about the North Troy situation. Considering that Jay Peak is owned by MSSI, I suspect they are doing everything they can to ease access for our Canadian friends. I would be surprised if they were not on the lobbying effort to delay passport requirements for boarder crossing.

I am rather liberal/progressive in my beliefs and think the fence they want to build on the Mexico boarder is a joke. All the same, I think the boarders need to be tightened up more, not less. Any one else familiar with where the 9/11 folks crossed? If you are driving to Jay (or any other Northern Vermont area) from Canada, you just have to leave more time. It is just the world we live in and unlike airport security, I appreciate security measures being improved instead of laxed after a few years of no issues.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks.

Jay has no control on the situation. Being the closer area from the border traffic jam, Owl's Head might have seen some extra customers today. That's what I would have probably done.

Border in St.Armand (I-89) is better equipped to deal with a massive influx of border. With the new snow at Jay, everyone is probably hitting the same tiny border crossing at North Troy. In 2-3 hours, that's the time it can take Montrelers to hit Smuggs, Stowe, Bush or MRG.

Anyway, for the real stuff you had to cross the border at St.Armand on Thursday morning like us.

I don't think that one business can change the situation or opinion of Homeland Security, especially with all the efforts in having the Passport requirements changed done by the Canadian government plus governors from the bordering states.

Business on both side of the border are going to suffer, the economy of these states and so interconnected with the Canadian business and markets and vice-versa. But were had this debate here some time ago.

The problem here is a main misconception about borders and 9/11. NONE OF THE 9/11 FOLKS CAME FROM CANADA or crossed the US/Canadian border.

I believe that the problem here might affect some crossing more than others. Montrealers and Quebecers have to many areas to choose from, if you add an extra hassle, they'll just go elsewhere. Sutton or Orford might not be Jay, but the skiing is very good and the drive is slightly shorter, lift tickets cheaper and no border hassles.

As someone that have crossed the US/Canadian borders many times of year for the last 25 years, I cannot say that the border crossing were laxed before 9/11. Actually the easier crossing in years was probably on Thursday morning, I guess my car is on file with my name and they probably know that if there's good skiing to be had, I'll be crossing the border from now and then. :P

amazing how misinformation spreads, even amongst those that consider themselves well informed, i stand corrected on that 9/11 boarder issue as it seems they flew into the country at major airports. i was aware they were able to enter legally based on standards of the day.

i think you mixed up your quotes above ;)

Riverc0il may have been thinking about the Millenium bomber who was apprehended in late 1999 entering the U.S. at Port Angeles, Washington on a ferry from Victoria, B.C.
