Let me start of by clearing all of the powder out of my throat. \/
I ready Powderfreaks forecast late last week. I did a little weather research of my own to confirm and I was convinced this would be "the little storm that could" that caught everyone with their pants down and dropped a crazy amount of Powder at Jay. I convinced a bunch of co-workers to go along with my sister and a couple other friends. I said there would be a foot of snow there on Saturday morning. Well I think we all know what happened. Long story short...16-24+ inches of pow-pow \/ =P~ \/ were ripe for the picking.
The drive up was showing snow most of the way. Wake-up in Lyndon had 6" of snow on the ground. PfunkRide had driven up the night before with a buddy and crashed on the couch (they're headed to Jackson Hole this week). The rest of the crew started dragging in around 7:00. We scarfed down some bacon and egg sandwiches. The group was probably a bit large to keep organized as we got a really last start and getting tickets and so forth at Tramside turned out to be a big mess. We parked at tramside since we were in need of some rental equipment and special passes. It turned out that this delayed us by about a half an hour getting on the slope since we had to ride the deathly slow beginner Quad up in order to traverse over to state side (Tram and Flyer on wind hold ).
Needless to say the group ended up breaking apart and hit the hill.
1st run: yee haa! hit the liftline between Can Am and Deliverance. Huge drift at the top upon entry to the soot was the source of my first powder explosion of the day and earned a lot of hoot and shouts of appreciation from the lift. I was in a small group with friends Ian and Ryan at this point. We had a really good run to the bottom through the bumps as a perfect warm-up run. When I got to the bottom I was literally shaking with excitement. I couldn't get back up there fast enough. The lift line was already starting to grow and it would just keep getting bigger with the other lift closed (never actually made it over to Jet Triple that day).
2nd Run: was through Deliverance. The shoots were already starting to track out. Found some nice powder down lower.
3rd Run: Vertigo. Geez people had already thrashed a lot of the powder. We still found a lot of good stuff though.
4th Run: Hiked the face. Straight up! Wind was howling and the drifts were HUGE! Ian, PfunkRide, and I made it all the way up the summit building. The area immediately below the cliff was bulletproof windblown ice. However, a little creativity led to a amazing series of 6 drifts lined up for the taking. It was heaven! Set up for a great video on the 2nd pitch of the face where you enter back into the trees. More drifting here. I took some stills out of the video. See below.
The rest of the day consisted of hiking to the western side of the mountain. We should have done that to begin with. No lift service = more powder for me.
Anyway, it was a great day. I have never spent so much time under the snow. Trip report from Sunday at Burke will be posted tomorrow.
