met up with NHPH and sledhaulingmedic at jay peak today. great day of skiing guys, thanks for the company and it was great skiing with both of you. and great to finally met you NHPH! as i mentioned to NHPH in the bar post skiing, it is always great hooking up with a few other excellent skiers and doing a mountain proper, much more fun than skiing alone.

temps were very warm at jay peak today! so much so, after three runs, we all returned to the lodge to dump some layers. i wasn't thinking it was spring skiing yet when attaching my ticket to my jacket this morning  so had to request a replacement ticket at the window for my ski pants and clipped my ticket on the jacket. of course, i didn't realize this until we were getting in line for the tram! doh.

any ways, the snow wasn't your typical spring corn nor was the temp warm enough to make things slushy yet, but it was nice. it is gonna go quick though. it was good quality wet snow.

skiing was excellent. most of the woods still had decent cover and a lot of off the map shots skied great as well. coverage definitely starting to get thin in places, but tons of choice lines. i was really having a ball in timbuktu and beaver pond glades were dreamy, too bad we only did one shot through BPG. definitely was liking the jet best due to its sustained pitch and great options. ripping turns under the jet, sweet nearly nero bumps on UN, kitzbeuhel bumps kicked like a mule but were fun, and the trees were holding up well over there.

decent coverage everywhere except down low especially near the lodges. good conditions will likely stay throughout the week at jay, but this is the last horrah folks. jay may be open until next weekend, but the good stuff will be gone by then without more snow and with current temps.

comparing the no bull to jay's report: they are reporting primary as packed pow but primary is definitely wet snow right now. nothing wrong with wet snow, it is great! but there is nothing packed powder about it.

hard to believe it is almost over. i feel like i was just starting to get warmed up. guess that is what happens when you are out injured for three months!!! thanks again guys for the great company and fun skiing, looking forward to doing it again sometime.

Nice! No pics once again. Your really starting to slack on the jay trip reports.. Tried to get my dad up there today but it just wasn't going to happen, kinda understandle though because it is a 4 hour trip.

p.s. we need a liftlines tux meeting one of these weekends coming up...

Steve:

Great to see you back on the boards and, for that matter, get to ski with you when I wasn't wearing a red parka.

Likewise, great to meet NHPH and spend the day trying to keep up with you both in the trees. Great snow, great terrain and great company. Can't ask for a better day on the hill.

Hey rc,

I was there too! I thought I recognized a dude that looked like your avatar, but he was wearing shorts. I thoroughly enjoyed the day. The only bummer was when we skiied the out of bounds run off Timbuktu down to the road where I had left my truck. The upper part was great, but the lower elevation was like glue, untracked and bushy. I was talkin' to myself.

Thursday at Smuggs was equally enjoyable. We did a couple hikes off the back of Spruce Peak. Also spent some time in the igloo off Chilcoot to, um, escape the heat  After we all came back out, we were helping a dude named Monkey (who built the igloo), passing some fallen ice blocks up to him so he could rebuild the top of the chimney section, when the whole chimney collapsed inside. Monkey was bent over at the waist, half-in and half out, teetering for a few moments. We laughed like hell afterwards, but it was clear that the chimney was not going to be rebuilt. At least he has some more bench seats for the inside.

Was there that day as well, and, damn, was it fun. Though I'm not quite ready for spring skiing, I did enjoy the soft snow and warm weather and took advantage of limiting lines at the Tram. Played off the Ridge for most of the day and was much impressed with my new Bro Model skis (http://pmgearusa.com/index.html). From essentially straightlining the Saddle to zipper-lining the corny bumps on Liftline, these beasts proved versatile enough to make even a chump like me feel somewhat champ-ish.

Anyhow, they got a slight refreshing on Saturday so there should still be some good days ahead for Jay.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and that's just the way it is),

gincognito, i remember seeing a pair of bro's in the tram! bro's are pretty rare on the east coast, that was the first one i saw in person. i was probably right next to you at one moment that afternoon.

So how did the Bro's handle with less than idle conditions for such a fat ski?

Yeah, not too many Bros on the East Coast, but they are out there. To be honest, the girth does take a run or two to get used to, but after that it is rarely an issue (I haven't been on my Karmas since I got these).

They're super-light given their size (as light or lighter than the above mentioned Karmas, which are 9cm shorter and significantly skinnier) and, combined with a slightly more centered mounting point, they're surprising easily to swing around the trees and bumps. They hold an edge really well, once you get in the drivers seat, and are very stable - making short, straightlines and random airs easy to ski out of. Best of all, they plow through anything. Once you get them going and are on the ball, random clumps of snow or crust or whatever that might have caused a ski to go squirrely are powered through without a second thought.

Having said all that though, I can't wait to try the 179 that recently came out. I'm sure those things will be a blast.

I'll probably be at Jay again this weekend if anyone wants to meet up...

d.
