Met up with Nhski and from_the_NEK for a mid-week assault on Jay Peak as yet another major April snow storm slammed into New England with more on the way. I am quickly getting used to this and hope I will not suffer too much withdrawal when Spring finally returns with a vengeance to wash all this wonderful whiteness away.

Jay Peak's web page is reporting 10" 24 hours and 20" 48 hours which does not match up to what we skied today. It was excellent but it wasn't 20" even in the untracked that was not hit yesterday. I would say closer to 16-18" total for the two day storm, not shabby for April regardless of how you measure it.

But that 20" was over the course of two days, so on lines that had been tracked yesterday, we only found 10" untracked in the A.M. Despite light crowds, I felt that it went quick as any one out there knew where to find the goods. I would not expect much untracked for Saturday but the snow is really good. Warm weather was getting the best of snow near the bottom of the mountain with some exceptionally wet and heavy snow down low. Things were still powdery on the upper sections of the mountain, but even after 20", Spring and April are letting their presence be known.

That said... ;) Oh My Goodness was it nice in the spots that were untracked from both two days. We went steep and deep on a few shots with Nhski taking the money shot of a picture while I descended into white powdery bliss. from_the_NEK got in on the action and he's the skier disappearing into the powder in the video. Some days I think they should rent snorkels at the rental shop.

Definitely an awesome day but no where near what I had expected. Conditions wise, today was not as good as any day last weekend Fri-Sun and probably Mon as well. But it was an awesome day skiing with two fantastic guys I love sharing turns and adventure with. Completely undecided what to do tomorrow with Jay tracked up and Backcountry begging for some turns. C'mon cold air for the Sunday through Monday event!

Sorry for the crappy digital camera quality video as my digital camcorder was not available today. As always, please Right Click and select Save As.

Here is a teaser from the Photo Gallery of Nhski's wonderfully timed money shot of me going deep. Now I know where JayPeakResort.com gets there best shots, lol.

I made my first trip ever to Jay Peak yesterday -- at 3.5 hrs each way it's slightly outside what I usually consider day-trip territory but it was a Friday and there was a lot of snow, so what the hell. I'd also considered Sunday River as they were opening the west side yesterday for the first time in a while, but I opted for the higher elevation in hopes of finding drier snow up top. I also figured Jay would have the best odds of more snow during the day, which they did get a little of.

Now I see why people rave about Jay ... it really has a different feel to it than other places I've skied in the East. I also can see why it could be a problematic place in the wind -- calm day overall but pretty gusty at times at the top of the Flyer and the Tram.

By my measurements 16-18" up top was a fair reading. Pretty silky snow at higher elevations but springlike down below -- not that I'm going to complain about spring conditions on lots of fresh snow when the calendar reads April 13!

IF these were my last turns of the season, my final run -- Power Line, with nobody else on it -- was a fine, fine way to end up.

Season tally: 5 powder days, 1 powder night. Given my work/family situation and location and considering the late start to winter, this has turned out to be one helluva season.

The 8" Rule was in effect on Friday for us at First Trax. Gotta love those bonus powder days. Hooked up with Eamon and Jay at the Quad, noticing that every one was headed to the triple we were the only ones at the red chair so we figured we would stay put. As we rode up we new that the trail to hit would be the Can - Am. Nothing like having the wide open Can-Am with 8" of fresh snow to start the day off. It certainly got my heart pumping trying to stay ahead of the the hard charging Eamon and Jay on their boards. Its a good thing my BD Verdicts like the big turns and high speeds, that you get when the conditions are just right on the Can-Am. After a few more high speed runs on the Tele's and the snow starting to thicken, my legs were already starting to shake, so i figured if i want to hang with the two seasoned riders i better get my powder gun out. Broke out the Burton Republik 166 for my fifth day on a board this season. Good choice indeed. The big gun charged through the heavy mank with ease. It was great to be back on the ultimate powder weapon. The last time i got to ride with Shady was another epic day when i got to visit him out in Jackson Hole after they got slammed with a bunch of snow in 2006.

Good times.

more powder!!!

Nice stuff riv, FirstTrax..... 8) The Green Mtns have really delivered this season...Nothing like Elevation eh?!!!

While elevation is important, location is the more important factor. If elevation was the determining factor, the mountains of NH and ME would have significantly higher snow totals. The Northern Green Mountain Spine is situated just right to take advantage of weather patterns that generally do not extend to other, often taller, mountains in the Whites. Jay Peak for example is not even 4000 vertical tall (and some of the best terrain is substantially lower in elevation than the summit) despite the suggestion otherwise from the resort.

...What one reads on a map as elevation is "above sea level", not from the ground up...fwiw. *Wonder what Saddleback's freebee/final day will bring!(crowd-wise);-) Will bring the camera for pics...
EDIT: riv, Y'know...I do think you're right about Location though!...the extra miles NE does get some extra kicks from weather systems...regardless of elevation...(*Didn't intend to make it sound like was disagreeing with ya'...have been writing out 2006-Return checks to both Washington and Augusta this afternoon. Just a fun afternoon;-)

Right, that would be vertical gain. My description of Jay as having "4000 Vertical Tall" was not worded accurately.

I would expect it to be not that busy. Busier than a normal Spring weekend, but not necessarly more.

I've gone a few freebies (or almost) days in the past, never that busy considering that it's for free.

I just watched the video, then read this.

Just back from Jay and a report is forthcoming. This is NOTHING like last week. Not as much snow and much heavier. Really good for April but conditions wise, doesn't compare to last weekend in the slightest today.

I don't want to know what last weekend was like.

I just love when I come home from what I thought was a very good day of skiing then look at your report.

Haven't seen you on a board in years... See you @ the trail day on April 28th!
