Jay Reports from Wednesday/Thursday?

Any one that skied Jay on either Wednesday or Thursday care to pipe in with a report? Jay is reporting a storm total of five feet  The folks at Burke said that Jay was essentially closed down today due to lift holds, but I would like to hear first hand which lifts ran and which lifts turned and for how long. Based on what I skied at Burke today from 3p-4p, I am going to assume no completely untracked lines except in wind held areas, occasional untracked off the beaten path, and really nice packed powder most every where covering up all but the worst of junk. Any one confirm that? I am especially skeptical that the lower angle glades are even skiable considering the dense and heavy snow fall. Today at Burke I went thigh deep on 20-24 degrees and got held up in the snow, crazy. So comment away if you have skied Jay in the past 48 hours because I scored a holiday tomorrow and am trying to make a decision :D

Jay, on wednesday was fantastic, as expected. Showed up at 10am with about 6-8 on the ground. Snowed lightly til up 1pm, then starting dumping. The place was very empty all day long. Gotta love those mid week days when you mostly a weekend warrior. Took a couple of groomers to start to get a handle of my new mantras. Then hit the woods and it was boot deep. By 2pm, made a few runs over in Beaver and it was really starting to pile up, top boot deep, probably 14-16 had fallen by then. left at 3pm, went to a bar for an hour, came out and another three inches were on top of my truck.

On Thursday, woke up to see the ridiculous 59 inches reported. All lifts on hold. Skinned up in pretty cold temps and nastly blowing wind. Skied Kitz and Hells. Tons of snow, but wind compacted. Came down and saw the bondaventure running. Skied a few canyon land runs. For at least the runs i did today, it was better and will be better where the snow has been chopped up slighly. Will search for the less wind effected woods tomorrow.

No way to really tell how much fell and the winds have been going like crazy since last night. My guess would be 3 1/2 to 4 feet.

wow, those mantras really rock.

Nice! Very brave skinning up into that type of weather. Or very desperate for powder turns! Sounds like Friday should be good up there and I happen to have scored a vacation day when I had not expected one. Stateside at 8:00-8:15?

Break it up for me. I will be there Sat A.M. first thing. Friends in Stowe said that first tracks were not the best. It got better once people kicked it around a bit. I am hoping for some decent snow on Saturday. If the tram is not turning tomorrow. I plan on hitting the tram first thing. We will see. See you all on the hill..

complete nonsense. i am not saying that it wasn't deep, but to say that 59 or even 60 inches fell is nonsense. everywhere else in the state reported similar numbers and then the marketing frenzy begins with a ridiculous report for this morning.

I can say that wednesday was the day, storm skiing in those sorts of conditions is unbeatable. Today was a different story. the wind beat the living crap out of the snow, it was very compacted everywhere. no aspect was safe from the swirling and constantly changing wind direction.

there is an enormous amount of snow. there is probably 3 to 4 feet of new stuff. it is not blower at all, dense, solid base material. skiing should be very good from here on out. get out and enjoy it.

In my opinion, jay got the same amount of snow as the other nothern mts, it is hard to believe that we could have gotten that much more here.

The wind was so strong today that it will never really be known what our snow total out this storm was, but like i said before, there is a lot of new snow.

We'll see... I know a bunch of people who'll be at Jay today and they're pretty good at gauging the snowfall.. i'll report back as soon as I here from them. ( i'm stuck in the design office on deadline  )

really hard to gauge the snow depth up at jay today considering it was more of the same wind loaded dense snow. you could hit untracked and only sink boot deep or maybe knee deep in wind protected areas. they you loose a ski, try to hike back up, and sink down to your waist... and that wasn't even going down all the way to the base! jay was impressive today in terms of snow depth, hard to believe how much more snow loaded up compared to last week! it is night and day. 60"? i dunno. but definitely way more than burke's three feet, that is for damn sure, and still falling.

first time poster here long time reader, drove up to jay wednesday night in the blizzard for a two night stay at the snowshoe. didnt want to take any chances on when the snow would stop so figured thurs and fri would be the way to go. woke up on thurs to find out everything was on wing hold, so decided to hike up at around 8:30 started at angels wiggle to the montrealer and stop for a breather/ warmup at the patrol hut by the triple. after 20 mins or so i was anxious to head out considering the only guys that were in there were going down the U.N. well that pretty much made up my mind headed straight out towards the DIP no one else had been there yet so it was all mine the board couldnt had handled it any better. going down i had to stop and take a look at what was going on out there, big mistake i ended up sinking up to my neck in snow terrible digging my self outta that .anyways finally got to the last pitch toward the road epic. caught a ride back to the lot and went in for a beer. next thing you know its one o'clock and a jay rep has announced that the red chair will be turning on so it was a mad dash over . most people rode up the metro quad i decided to jump in the truck and beat them all there. third chair ! straight to canyon land untracked first one in thanks. went up for another ride and decided to hik up and ride down Poma Line to BBP well thats all she wrote i have had a great day and i was freezing so headed in for a couple of apres ski libations.
Friday snowing again!!
red chair opened at 9:30 and they were saying that the triple would open at 10:00 so i decide to take a small hike up to Everglade perfect decision all the tracks from the hikers/ skinners from thurs were completely covered in so another great runjumped on the Metro and headed for the triple probably tenth chair or so alot of snakes out the cutting the line acting like its no big deal well karma will get them and ill keep snaking there lines anywho.. hit the dip again not many lines up there yet i was pretty suprised , got a ride back up and hit the triple for aride through Kitz woods now there are many more tracks you can still find freshies but not after today.so i decided to head for the red chair and hike up to poma line again. the hike up there was deadly couldnt see five feet ahead of you and was wondering if it was worth it, it was
once i got into tehtrail the wind had died out headed out bbp again and to my surpise there werent many tracks there either. after a couple of apres ski or at least i thought libations i headed back over to the car and noticed there was no line for the red chair so i said why not?hti up canyon land totally tracked out but still great snow. So thats it sorry if it was a long report but i felt it necessary to share it with someone since i could not get anyone to come up there with me . I will post some pics someday when i get around to unpacking and finding the camera.

maddog, welcome and thanks for sharing your report. it amazes me how quickly canyonland gets tracked out. i very rarely ski canyonland because i very rarely find good conditions in there (relative to the rest of the mountain). i am sure it is great for first tracks, but there are so many better lines first thing in the morning. can't believe you went for the dip... on a board no less! i didn't even bother heading out that way as the flats were terrible with all the snow. i am sure it will get trashed this weekend though once some snow gets packed down and moving around is easier. cheers and way to earn em' when the lift went down.

Look at picture #3.

Note the ski racks indicating snow depth and the metal sign indicating wind strength.

Just walked in the door after skiing Jay from Friday through today. Too tired for a full ski report tonight, but I here's an executive summary. I looked at the Thursday lift report when I arrived Thursday night and it appeared as though the Boni chair was the only major lift open that day. On Friday everything but the Tram and the Freezer was open. All lifts were turning on Saturday. There was a ton of snow, but it was wind slabby in many places where first tracks were available and not soft and deep(the winds were howling prior to our arrival and blew hard all weekend). In fact, it could be argued that second tracks were preferable over parts of the mountain. It was perfect, however, for filling in the mountain and the glades. The Face Chutes were open, but you had to pick your way down the top through the rocks and ice.....same with Green Beret. Once past the headwall, conditions were great, but somewhat wind slabby. All of the glades were tracked up by the weekend, but skiing very well. The entrances to Vertigo and Deliverance still require a bit of rock/stump hopping, as does much of Staircase, but that's half the fun. Staircase was closed for most of the weekend, but opened up again late Sunday afternoon (after another foot of snow) and we had first tracks for most of the run. It was pretty well protected from the wind and the snow was nice and soft, but there were a few sketchy to negotiate at the top. It was bitterly cold today, but will supposedly warm up tomorrow.
