Killington just changed their site to day they will open tommorrow, Monday 11/10, at noon. Most areas are blowing snow and Kmart will beat them open by a little bit but this just isn't as big a deal as it used to be. It's too bad their policy has changed to pass up the early opportunities, and I personally think they will regret giving up their unique identity, but it's still nice to see things finally getting started.

it is going to be very interesting to see if their marketing department still tries to put the spin of "first to open in the east top to bottom" this year. I believe that this would not be correct even if we only compared it to MSS for the following reasons:

MSS is opening west 70 and nordique, which don't extend the full vertical of the hill (from what i understand of the trailmap) so does that qualify them as open T2B? Most would probably say no, even thought that is the extent of the runs serviced by that chairlift.

However, if K only opens the canyon area and uses the K1 gondola, and the gladed triple, then they are really only offering skiing on a small portion of the vertical offered by the mountain. Case in point. the K1 gondy accesses many runs that extend off the backside of k-peak which don't end at the k1 gondy. in fact, their entire vertical extends all the way to the end of Juggernaugh (i think). So in order for them to claim "first open t2b in the east" they would have to open a trail from the top of K summit to the bottom of the skyship area.

btw: what happened to the bottom of sunrise mountian there? seems that it has been left off the trailmap?

just so you guys(and gals i persume) know if you really want to go ski a half day at killington tommorow it will only cost you a mere 35 dollars US, compared to MSS 12.50 Canadian lol
porter

i'm gonna weigh in on this a little more later on when i have time.. was just checkin in to see if anyone had any inside info... for now all i can say is, thank god!!!!!! i'll be burnin turns on thursday morning and all is well!!!!!

if K makes any outrageous claims, i suggest EVERYONE on this board get an email together and pass it along and give K A LOT OF $H!T on public forums!

they missed their opportunity and they should get NO PR spin off of this. they lost, plain and simple. they should be good sports about it and admit they lost. if i see ANY spin, i'm gonna go balistic!

i was a woodbury neigh-sayer... but they beat out K two years in a row! i have been proven wrong! does any one know if belleayre is T2B??? some ski area please be top to bottom by tomorrow besides K! they deserve ZERO press and PR for botching it this year.

can't wait to hear ya weigh in on this one joegm! enjoy your turns when you make them! i'm hoping for next weekend somewhere myself, depending who opens up.

just checked killington's web page...

$39 is the early season rate in effect to ski "three distinctive runs" (8 trails) ??????

they are MAD! that is simply CRAZY!

i agree, that price is OUTRAGEOUS! I would *never* pay that to ski for 1/2 day on 8 trails (3 distinct runs?)

let's do some simple math... they say 8 trails and 3 distinct runs... which means that k's 200+ trails really are only about 70 runs.... which is about what they have if you look at the trail map. i remember one summer reading about how the number of trails increased from about 160 to over 200 and they didn't cut a single new trail! PR/Marketing is out of control there! (and i'm not even going to bring up the time they talked about the killington "glacier" they made.... ok, i guess i just did...)

Alright, so a half day at killingotn is gonna cost you $35 for 3 runs total, when they are 100% open they charge (120 for 2 days so, they dont have one days posted but I think it is around $62.) so you are paying $35 for 3 runs or during prime season you pay $62 for 70 runs.

that is $0.88 per trail when they are 100% open or $11.6 per trail when they are open this time of year, that is 1300% more per trail than you pay when they are 100% open,

to sum it up if you ski K this time of year you are gonna be paying 1300% more for what you get than if you ski it in the middle of winter. I think that it is obsured that they would charge $35 for 3 runs.

MSS is charing 12.5 canadian for their first day of skiing for two trails i dont want to do the math on that one but it is far more reasonable for the terrain that they are offering
porter

PS i think the math is correct i went over it a couple of times if not someone correct me

those bastards! damn Kmart, tomorrow is a day too late; i have to work monday to friday, and i have to move mountains to get a weekday off. i checked their site this morning, and they implied they would open during the week. i actually committed to meet my boss at 8am tomorrow to help him with a personal favor, so no way can i call in sick. have a great day, CD!

yeah, i'm so pissed, i meant to post that twice - ooops. sorry. right now you're thinking, "what, does he think we don't get 'points' for how many times we post extraneous garbage, like some other bbs?". no, just stupid-user-error.

and to add insult to injury, it just dawned on me that some people have a three or four day weekend for Veterans Day... and i gotta work! oh, to be a soundman again.

I might make it up there on Tuesday, but I can't count on it. It's actually probably more likely that I'll hit Bretton Woods; it's free to skin up...

A much shorter drive for me as well (well, 1.25 compared to 2.25-2.5 ish)

Man Wish i could get up there or anywhere that has some snow tommorow. Probably be a few weeks still before i get to get some turns in. Living in southeastern pa and being obsessed with skiing sucks. Tthe first scheduled opening in pa is 11/28. I'd pay the $35 at kmart or climb anything with snow just to get on my skiis again. Glad to see that some people are getting out there again though it means winters coming.

I've got to make some turns soon. It's killing me to know places are opening up and people are skiing. If I can find a ride sometime this week, I have no problem blowing off classes to make some turns. Too bad colleges don't take Veteran's Day off...

-Scott

Jonny D.

The trail map of MSS is incredibly badly built. The Nordique / West 70 have 200 meters high on 213 for St-Sauveur. (although I think I would have got a little bit more than 213 meters today for the complete mountain). This is 92+% of the hill's vertical anyway, this is really like T2B.

For Killington, they just su***d. They're 5th to open in the east, this year and they really don't deserve more than that. I'm in to write them sh***y e-mails, if they claim anything... (except being the first to open in New England or in Vermont, which remains right, although no one cares, cause 4 ski areas have beaten it, opening today !)
