Larry Schick's Gloating about Crystal Mt.

An interesting turn in the discussion. Perhaps Larry would be gloating even more because Seattle is a city, presumably with enough other diversions to keep people like CWHappyRN from getting bored.

Of course, the cities near good skiing have also had the 2000 +/- real estate run up. I think SLC is still the most affordable, but admin would know more about that.

Relative to most cities of this size it's still very affordable, but still skyrocketing. We've had no bubble burst here. The median home price rose something like $35K in the past year.

My brother has lived in a ski-town for a long time - Telluride, CO. Financially, it's been great since he bought property in town many years ago. He's cash-poor and house-rich. However, the turnover of people is high, but there are those who stay on and are consistent. I cannot walk into a bar there without getting recognized...and I visit for maybe 5-15 days per year. That's nice.

I do not have a high opinion of ski town folk. Generally, they are looking for a party...and not too much more. 30/40-something frat boys are a bit pathetic. Even more pathetic - if you buy a ski area like Telluride and get kicked out of town bars because you a raging alcoholic.

The biggest problem is housing in ski towns. With this 2000 +/- real estate run up...you cannot live where you work anymore in ski towns. Unfortunate but true.

Well, I always wanted to live in a ski town. At high school graduation at 17, being a junior ski patrol, I had a small deisre to. I realized that I would be bored. I am not a drinker, maybe 20 drinks in my entire life. After entering grad school the first time, etc., I was glad that I never lived at a ski resort. I even quit skiing. Then, I took skiing back up when my clinical profession demanded some serious relief (all day long in the mountains). I am near Los Angeles, aabout 2.5 hours. The drive is not easy! It is just very small townish and small (not packed with maturity and worthwhile conversations). We are mostly a border town. I am not interested in that. It is crowded here. It is embarrasing sometimes to live here, be here. I mean like a degenerate place. My professional life is full of opportunities to work more and more in the emergency room, any time, practically. I have done very little skiing. Skiing has become stressful! The crowds and patrolling in the throngs of boarders. I think transferring (National Patrol transer all the time) to a more cross country ski area or other non-flash, non-grandiose (immature) area with similar folks may work for me in the future! I love skiing to get away from it all, not to drink or hang out with degenerates! To each their own! I am an old fogie in my 40's! Carol

Seattle is a really great city. My favorite West Coast place.

Seattle is not cheap - SLC is much cheaper. But Seattle is cheaper than SF, Boston, WA DC, NYC....probably similar to LA or Miami. I know my expenses went down by about 20% from Boston-Seattle. Seattle was not a town on my radar - but recruiting trip made me see how great it is.
