JUNE 29

And my ski season moves elsewhere.

Here is a quick report from those within a Day-drive that aren't sure what to expect.

Yes, Mammoth is open until July 4th.

Temps at the summit was 40F and 64F at the base when I finished my last run. Skiing ends at 1pm.

Day started off at 8:30am, I was tired for yesterday drive for Las Vegas. Also I know from experience that I cannot go all out (especially in High Altitude) wihtout paying the price later on. I'll be at Mammoth until closing the closing on July 4th.

Ah yes, yesterday drive from Las Vegas > Hoover Dam > Lake Mead > Valley of Fire > stunk in traffic for maybe 2 hours on I-15 east of Vegas(accident / travel less than 2 miles during this time) > Vegas toward Beatty-Big Pine-Mammoth LAkes. Total time: 12 hours. I actually left Vegas at 5pm and got to Bishop at 10pm. Didn't stop to eat during that time, that road is in the middle of nowhere. Even the Cottontail Brothel is out-of-business.

I made it to Mammoth at 10:45pm, I stop to grab a pizza on the go in Bishop. Ah yes, I remember Tony talking about my driving between Jackson and SLC last winter, he said I was being conservative with the 85mph (speed limit) that I was driving. Well, guess what? I was stopped by the police right after I arrived on highway 395 (between Big Pine and Bishop). This could have cost me mucho dollares. I think I was driving around 80mph, but contraly to Nevada where the speed limit was 75mph, here it was at 65mph.

GIVE US THE REPORT MAN!!!

Nice marsh potato snow, bottom groomer were firm until 10am maybe.

I was able to ski the fun stuff on the top. Climax and Cornice (groomed) were the most popular. Hangman were for the diehard. The margin for error is fairly low, the hourglass is probably 10ft wide. Entry is tricking, however it was fun and it was pure adrenaline. :P Where was my helmet?

Hike up above chair 23 twice. Drop Out was also good, however I didn't ski it from the top, I prefer hiking to Wipe Out and skiing it (right of chair correct?). Wipe Out 2 look nice, however you need to walk over to the snow. Same for the Paranoids that are now 3 distinctive runs.

The bottom of Broadway was fine although a bit grabby at the end of the day. What do you want, this is almost July after all. Last run at 1:02pm was on Climax, the run had become grabby, but summer skiing on snow is definitely better than sand.

That's it, my internet use is almost up.

Here are the stats for Tony (sorry, it's in metric).

14 runs
Time: 4:35
Descent 6260m (1m=3.3ft) 79m/min
Ascent 52m/min. Gondola is running at reduce speed approx 15min ride.

It sounds a bit better than I expected, considering it rained most of yesterday. The webcam shows a lots of discolored snow near the base of chair 1, which I would presume would be sloppy. But they probably salted it a lot and it dried out.

I will be driving up tomorrow to join Patrick for the weekend. Not likely to arrive before 10PM.

um... that is pretty fast. Last year when I was driving from Reno to Mammoth I got the rented dodge neon up to 100mph, which was the fastest i've ever driven... I don't think that was a good idea in hindsight, especially considering it was 1am...

Have fun!

My recollection of the Jackson-SLC drive was that Patrick was driving in the 70's while I was in the low 80's.

I have collected a substantial number of tickets on 14 and 395 over the years. I usually put it in cruise control around 80 but recommend scrupulously observing the speed limit driving through the Owens Valley towns. IMHO 85mph is the point at which you are increasingly likely to attract the attention of the CHP on 14 and 395.

On a more amusing note, http://forums.mammothmountain.com/forum ... erthread=y
I guess Shel Silverstein never visited Mammoth.

Here is an update for June 30th.

Same as yesterday but I was in the gondola at 7:45am. 17 runs  during the 5 1/2 I skied. To answer to Lucky Luke and Frankontour I did take alot of pictures today (didn't bring my camera yesterday).

Skiing wise. Climax (a few times again), Hangman (only once - at one point I saw 9 skiing in it at the same time). It shouldn't get better in the next few days. Hike up about Chair 23 to ski Drop Out and Wipe Out. Beautiful. I stayed maybe 30 minutes at the top and spoke with someone from Mammoth that was looking over the chair and the snow. I have a felling that 23 and the gondola might open tomorrow. \:D/ However to get away from the people I might think of hiking toward Scotty's and the Noids.

It was definitely warmer today, the bottom is melting quick. Broadway is safe (I think), however Mambo / Forest Trail and the lower part of St.Anton is going to get marginal fast if the forecast I just heard in correct. Ah yes, I skied Gravy Chute twice under the Broadway chair at around 1pm. I just saw a couple of tracks, so I decided to take off my skis and hike to the edge. :P Sweet indeed.

Ah yes, get there early because today (like yesterday) people had to park along the road.

\:D/

Happy Canada Day !!!

JULY 1ST 8)

Skiing in July. 10 months in a row (12 if you count the sand skiing last August and Grass skiing in September).

I actually skied less than the previous two days, Tony and I ended up teaming up for a few runs with some people from the Mammoth forum.

I didn't have my camera, but Tony took a few action shots of myself in Paranoid and Hangman twice. Unfortunately he didn't snap them in one of my biggest crash in the last 15 years and probably lifetime. Top 3 for sure since the early 90. Ended up skiing backward at warp speed once I reached the hourglass in Hangman. :? That's before the backflips. Yes, I'm continued skiing. Always remember to ski conservative at the end of the day, unfortunately I should have choose my line better.

Rocks are now starting to top through Hangman. The openning of Chair 23 help the hikeless skiing for Drop Out and Wipe Out. Also made it to Paranoid which was nice. Ah yes, Tony missed another picture. Glen Plake and I talking.

I forgot to mention, everything is getting soft real early (except salted runs). Cornice Bowl, Climax, etc was soft at 8:30am.

JULY 2-3

Snow is melting fast, however the crew at Mammoth have been able to keep the lower runs (Mambo/Forest, Broadway. Fascination, St. Anton) covered to the lift.

Chair 3 area still has tons of snow while some rocks are starting to pop out on the top steep runs. However nothing that cannot be skied around. In Hangman, you need to jump across in the Hourglass. Climax, Cornice, Drop Out and Wipe Out are still great. Also skied Paranoid (Monument), Scotty's and Gravy Chute. All fun.

The whole mountain is a in Party atmosphere, tomorrow will be the Climax. I'm bringing my camera tomorrow and I'm sure Tony will have his also.

Sonofagun, there he is. Go figure that we see a photo of him elsewhere before we see his photos.
:D
I bet you will see him on someone else photos before you see his photos. Do you remember his last trip? We saw him in posts by at least 4 differents peoples who skied with him, but no picture of his own. My wife told me they looked like a bunch of japanese with their cameras in hand when she saw the picture in the Mammoth forum. :D

actually, I even offered Patrick to pay him a digital camera but he doesn't want...

I'm eager to see those pics, that's sure !

Go for it Frank! Then we won't have to wait for Patrick on powder days at Jackson Hole. Or clean up his camera yard sale like in Great Falls above Moonlight Basin. Patrick and I made another Mammoth Forum pic: http://forums.mammothmountain.com/forum ... erthread=y

Since you asked, here are the pics from Patrick's 2 runs in Hangman's on July 1. My usual line to ski Hangman's is along far skier's right above the throat at a consistent 40-45 degrees. This line was in great shape on my June trip but this time was gouged out to the rocks near the throat so I had to traverse up on a ledge and then sidestep through the throat.

Patrick demonstrated impressive technique well beyond mine by fluidly skiing the direct line down the middle which was close to 50 degrees. On his second run he didn't quite make it all the way.

[-o< I wish I had witnessed that one! :D :D Looks like he tumbled for long just to see how far he ended from his gear and the htroat of the chute. #-o

Actually I don't think I carried too much speed, I had simply choosen the wrong line. When I realised I didn't have enough room, I put on the brakes, but started going backward. In hindsight, I should have try to do a 180 when I started skiing backwards, but the hill was steep and the surfaces was too soft so I tried to stopbackward. Needless to say, it didn't work.

As I mentioned above, at the end of the day, it is easier to a make mistakes in judgement (no, I didn't drink any champagne THAT day on the top of Mammoth. )

Yes, that fall was one of the highlights of the trip (lucky i didn't get seriously hurt). I rarely crash, but I guess when it happens... :?
