Mt. Washington, NH - Above average snowfall?

Near record daily high temps last weekend have put a dent in the snowcover, but it keeps accumulating!

The OBS report this morning of 13.7” Total Snowfall So Far This Month is only one tenth inch shy of the October monthly average snowfall of 13.8".

http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/today.html

The "24 Hour Statistics" & "Almanac Data" of the 6AM report are for observations over the previous 24 hours ending at 1:45AM EDT.

Today's hourly reports have listed snow for 8 of the hours since 2AM, so by now the OBS should have measured at least one tenth inch snowfall, and more.

Tomorrow morning’s report should show an already above-average October snowfall, with twelve days left in the month!

Hopefully this above-average October snowfall is the beginning of a trend!

However, we were well below normal in September (only a Trace of the average 2.4" snowfall).

With a little luck, we’ll have made up the deficit by October 31, and be on our way to an above-average seasonal snowfall, as well!

Think snow!

Hey, here too, a pool for the snowfalls on Mt Wash please, Lftgly !

I hope it will pass above the 400'

Here, the gaz price just climbed and the reason is the very big winter they're forecasting in North America. I can't wait any longer to see it !!

i was hiking mittersill's slopes today and noticed that lafayette and lincoln had lots of accululated snow above tree line too! i was amazed at the amount of snow up there considering recent temperatures. also, it was snowing at the top of mount jackson as i overlooked cannon and lafayette!! cannon had a few small patches of snow on upper ravine, skylight, and taft slalom. won't be long now!

found some new and exciting "trails" today ;) can't wait to get on skis and try them out!

Hey River,
I haven't hiked mittersill in a while but I have heard about the folks who mkae there own chutes and such. Discovered my fair share skiing there two. Last chat we have a big discussion about doing it too. Should be fun over there when the snow hits.
Porter in NH
PS have you ever found any that go into the valley between cannon and mittersill

lftgly, no brush work from me actually. although i did clear a blow down out from one of the narrow trails, so i guess that counts right? my goal for yesterday was to find some cuts the locals have made. although if i had some fellow skiers to hook up with, i'd gladly be down for cutting some new lines ;)

i'll have to get in on these chats, Salida1986! we'll have to plan a little something something next summer. i'm sure there are more hidden stashes on mittersill than any one person could know... so it never hurts to poke around a bit!

regarding the valley between cannon and mittersill, i know of nothing although i'm sure there are some custom cuts in there. the only thing i've heard of between middle hard and barrons would be bunny direct or something along those lines??? to hairy for me tho.

here's some pics of cannon and mittersill from my hike, enjoy!:
http://www.netway.com/~theway/hiking/2003/mittersill.htm

WOW !!

I love the page 2, Riverc0il !!! (page 1 is good too, of course)

I should create my own lines... I already have some great ideas of places to build them, but it's not easy, when there is employees in the mountains every day long, in summer, and that they don't like to see cutters ;) I found a very nice spot to make a little trail/chute at Val St-Côme yesterday... this would probably take me 30 minutes to make it perfect... the nature simply did it almost perfect. But VSC is not the best place to make some trails, as it's a south side not so elevated, so the snowfalls are less big than at La Réserve where the potential is huge.

But seriously, your pictures make me seriously consider to do a trip to Cannon (and Mittersill) next winter !

next winter??? why not this winter! LOL.

us cannon nuts on the board can give you the guided tour ;)

thanks about the pics, btw.

I meant winter 2003-04 !!
I don't know when I'll have the time to go there, but the $US is cheap, now, so I must take advantage of this

If they're once again grooming every trails this season, it will be really : Kinsman, Tramline, Hard, Mittersill. that's all !

I would appreciate a lot the "guided tour" !!

regardless of grooming on cannon proper, they can't touch mittersill (without breaking the law that is!) nor the many off map shots on cannon proper. there's more stuff not groomed at cannon/mittersill than you can ski in one day, mark my words on that one!

Last year they groomed a part of Mittersill a couple of times, according to what I read here...

Honestly, there is too much ungroomed stuff to ski in one day at Mt Alta too, here... except if you want to do 50 rides up ! Lol joking ! (it's probably possible to ski all the nice spots with about 30-35 runs, which is quite possible, although I prefer the quality of the best spots than to try 'em all, at Alta)

With a good guide, Cannon / Mittersill would be a great possibility for me, that's sure !

Looking to your pics of Mittersill, I found there was some possible resemblances with the old trails of Mt Plante, although this is a little mountain.

This video is simply amazing... look at it like if it was a 2100' high mountain lol

It's just 2 megs for 1m30 of powder skiing in some narrow lines like the ones of Mittersill look. (I wouldn't put this video on a website visited by people living near Montreal)

This is a neighbour of Mt Alta...

http://www.mtnphil.com/mike/plante-2003/plante2003_wm7.wmv

river, that's good hear about visible snow on lincoln and laffy..my buddy and i are ridin up on tuesday to get our boots worked at p richelson's in plymouth... if the weather's right we're gonna try and hold up dan egan at tenney to let us slide a few rails's ) maybe if there's enough sustained line we'll make some mogul turns for our man anon :-) !!!!

Ya Frank,
I am sure there are plenty of cannon regulars here that would be glad to give you a tour. It has taken me years to find all of the good stuff, and i am still missing probably 75% of it.
Porter

Yeah, it's quite possible... as it's a big mountain. Even on a little one like Alta, I still find some major lines almost each time I go there, even though I ski it for 10 years... so I imagine in a mountain 10x bigger, like Cannon !

Frank, Cannon is one of the affordable ones to go to in the US. Each time I have gone there, I have rarely paid full price. Super Bowl Sunday (2 for 1: $42?US in 02) is even I good deal in Canadian Dollars!!! Even more this Winter.

Whoa, I should have checked back on the thread sooner! We ought to have a NBS get-together day at Cannon this winter. Sorry I couldn't make it to the Burke day last season (hope that Burke will host us again!). Like Patrick said, Cannon is already cheap, so I don't think we're likely to get any discounts for a No-Bull group (especially after JoeGM gave asst. mgr. Nat an earful last season!). After swearing everyone to secrecy, we could go ski places that I can't mention on the internet. River, if I had known you were coming up, I'd have put you to work! The Thirteen Turns on Tuckerbrook are getting really overgrown.

Thanks Lftgly,
Hopefully we all know of some that other people dont. Although it sounds like you may know more than the rest of us. It would be awesome if we could get a group together to go skiing at Cannon. Plus with the new kinsman glade i am sure that are many custom lines off of that trail as well.
Porter

i officially declare this thread HYJACKED!!!

Lftgly, i didn't venture down tuckerbrook during my trip... but the entrance looked bigger than i remember it! maybe just cause the snow makes the entrance smaller vertically, but it looked wider horizontally too! maybe i was just imaging things... but i remembered it being slightly hard to find whereas this past weekend it looked like a trail was diverging off the taft.

i've yet to ski tuckerbrook but it's on my to do list this winter pending i have a willing ski buddy who can do a car transport.

Lftgly, if you ever need a hand clearing stuff out up there let me know! i have no tools and have never worked on trails before, but am more than willing to learn and pitch in my part! then again, i like overgrown trails with brush and weed sticking up, hehe.

and i motion for a second on the NBS day at cannon!

Wow, FTO will become TCA (Tree Cutters Association) in summer lol

Finally, we should buy an enough big mountain... with absolutely no trails & lifts and to clear the trails without help of bulldozers. Just our own trails, nothing more than 20' wide, except a line for the cat, as cat skiing would be a great possibility !! Do you have some mountains in view ? I have one on my side, but its 1200' of steep vertical drop would probably be too little for most of you I guess. (base at 1600', summit at 2800', excellent powder area, especially as it rarely defrost.... hmm the dream of a life !) (I must say that the south side is probably higher... up to 2000' of vertical as what I've heard... but is it the same snow ?) Anyway, this is too far for 90% of the crew.
