Opening day "contest"

What is and where is the swampfest? If I choose not to ski one day at Sugarloaf with my pass, I can redeem that day for $25 Sugarloaf dollars, good for food, lessons etc. I believe that a one day pass at Saddleback is now about $35, so that is also a good value, and is about 30-40 minutes drive from Sugarloaf. Since I was last at Sugarloaf in March 1999, there were 3 new trails cut so I look forward to skiing there again. Sugarloaf also has some tough terrain besides the snowfields, which will likely not yet be skiable in mid-January. I'll save Smugglers for next year
when my son is willing to ski a bit more. Right now Sugarloaf is a better value to me for my money.

Swampfest has began in 2000, when Marc Guido came from Florida (swamps) to the Northeast to ski with few friends. The next year, Leigh Daboll from Skivt took the trip under his hands (and his business skills) and the trip is 5 days, 3 of them in QC and 2 in the States, actually. This year, it's from 7-11 january, if I don't mistake and they go to Jay Peak, Burke, Sutton, Orford and probably Bromont, this year, instead of Owl's Head. How much people there ? something like 40-50 I think, mostly from Skivt-L. Too bad I will probably never have the chance to do the trip, cause of the industry where I will work

It's a pleasure, Anon ;)

Personally on the top of the first ski areas to open i think woodbury may sneak in there and win this year. looking at the weather i think they should be able to open November 8 or 9 becasue of there ability to open a trail overnight. Personally glad to see the beast not winning the race this year or really even having a big lead. Seems like with kmart aiming at having t2b before they open there gonna have alot harder time being the first open in the east. Glad to see quality is coming before titles this year.

i can't believe woodbury keeps coming up!! as much as i love rooting against K... if woodbury opens up a 100' beginner trail for a day or two before it all melts, it doesn't count!

I'm interested to see who actually opens first(In VT or NH), what kind of notice do they usually give? How does onw find out?

Ain't no place better than here, but perhaps I'm a bit biased. Or, to be more specific, in our Ski News section. Our newsroom generally gets word a day or two before it happens.

Or you could spend every couple of hours checking the websites of each of the likely candidates. Your choice.

Personnaly I would count Woodbury... but I somehow agree with Killington last year in their claim to have been the 1st one to open in the east.

Alex, the best place to see if the ski areas are going to open is probably looking to the No-bulls IMO, cause we're a dozen (or more) of maniacs who check the websites to see if they're going to open or listen the news, etc... The Ski News of Marc are also a good choice, but if they say at 10h in the morning that they open at noon (like in 2001 at St-Sauveur), Marc probably have less chances to see the spot than 12 persons together (theoritically )

Looks like we could see some snow/ice above about 1000 feet from southern new hampshier/vermont on Tuesday. Not a lot of snow, but cold enough temperatures to make snow. A slight warm up for wed. and then thursday night, friday night will be in the mid 20's, saturday in the mid 30's for highs, and then teens for lows for the upcoming future. Hopefully we will see someone open this weekend, bretton woods looks like it will have the best temperatures for snowmaking
porter

4" tomorrow in the Laurentians.

on october 21, they forecasted 2", we got 12.

I hope it will be the same this time

4" x 6 = 24"... very interesting ! lolol

Tonite will be very cold. snowmaking. Wednesday will be very warm : melting. thursday = just a little bit warm to make snow overnight. Saturday, sunday and monday appear to be very cold, so I think that St-Sauveur will open Sunday, Monday or at worst Thursday, if the forecasts don't change too much !

IT'S COMING !!!!!!!
Let's go snow !

i agree saint saveur first, one b/c of the 4 inches but mostly temperatures that will support snow making beofre anyone in the states, for america i say bretton woods first killington second, and okemo third, i dont think woodbury has a shot this year

Cold enough temps for possibly continuous snowmaking by this weekend in all of the northeast is appearing more and more likely. Even Albany, NY's low temperatures forecasted by the NWS this weekend are around 20...same with Burlington,VT. Translate that into the mountains and the Adirondacks and Whites have lows in the teens with around 20 in the Greens.

High temps of 30-35 and they may have to shut the guns off at the lowest elevations but places like Killington (KBL is at 2,000 feet) can probably run the guns all weekend top to bottom.

-Scott

Salida, I'm not sure that St-Sauveur will be the first with that.

Cause if St-Sauveur have the latitude advantage, it doesn't have the elevation advantage of Bretton Woods or Killington. The base of St-Sauveur is at about 700' high. (summit at 1400), so it's not over yet and I wouldn't be surprised to see BW, Okemo or even K-mart beat MSS.

Interesting, Scott, for the New England forecast this weekend. It's nice to see that, cause the 5 areas (including woodbury) will have the opportunity to make snow about on the same moment ! It's sad to see it so much late, but it looks like we'll have the first real opening war for over 40 years (not counting sunday/kill, cause they were just 2 players... now they're 5... and may be even 6, cause Tenney wanted to open its mid-station about at this moment, I think !?)

I just found that there was another player, this year, in the east. May be a little bit far from here, though !

It's set for november 7 (as of nov-3) and their webcam shows a ton of snow being made, but no date on the picture.

It's always one of the firsts to open in the mid-east and always one of the lasts to close :

Ski Brule (Michigan : opened on nov-1 last year)

The only question is : is it really in the "east" ?

Frankontour queried:

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
The only question is : is it really in the "east" ?<!-/Quote-!>

Nope!

so why does RSN put this on their "east" section, while Wisconsin, Minnesota & all are in the Central & Rockies ?

Isn't it Ontario, north of Michigan. We count the ontarian ski areas in the east... why not the ones in Michigan ?

(I need a US map)

Frank,
What is the scene at Tenney, I see that they have been open since Oct 4. Does anyone know of any improvements past the single Hike-Up trail? I'm just looking to get some fun in.

Michigan skiing is (I think) on the Western part of the state which is under Lake Superior and next to Wisconsin. As for Canada, there isn't any Midwest section, Ontario is some big that it strench from Quebec to the prairies (for those not as familiar with Canadian Geography).

For does interested:
Snow forecast: It just stop snowing here in central Ottawa (sky is still white). Accumulation approx 1 to 2 cm (not much for now). The First snow fall of the year started snowing 1:15 earlier (6:45am) than last year on November 4, 2002.

Hello everyone.

Been lurking for the past week or so, and decided to join up; seems like a great forum & a really good resource for checking Eastern early & late season reports...

Anyway, my vote is for Bretton Woods next Saturday or Sunday, with Killington possibly opening on the same date.

Tenney has been "open" for the past month. However, this is a 60' vertical terrain park. No lift. Basically you pay $25 to hike up a 60' patch of terrain park snow, then wait around in line.
