Park City Mountain and Canyons Resort, UT 11/23/12

Do the three areas have appreciably different contours or is it just how the runs and lifts were put in at PCMR, that caused all the perceived "flatness". Take something like McConkey's where half of the lift you are not really gaining elevation. And the reverse, on the way down.

No different than Empire at DV, and no small coincidence that both essentially share the same summit.

Earlier today I was at PC, looking up at Canyons & PCMR under a steady rain and hardly any snow at lower elevations except where they've been making it ... not feeling like skiing, at all. Also saw the cams from Snowbasin. Oh, the horror! Three traverses, one bunny hill, one blue run in the upper Needles open. Essentially, 1/2 a blah-run in total. Sundance pushed back their opening to Dec 14. DV has so much snowmaking capacity, they'll get going very quickly with cold temps. Though I wonder where they'll get the water: their pond was almost empty this summer.

Part of my fondness for Wasatch-back may stem from having moved here in the winter of 07-08 and having had some strong years shape my preferences. When there was still a difference in quantity but the comparison was between plenty and a ton. So yeah, there is that.

Anyone have discount tickets to Alta?

All 3 areas have the same topographic flaws IMHO. The Canyons is worst for the long runouts, but it has the most modern lift system to compensate. You could never have developed that mountain with old slow lifts. some of the lift rides would have been 20+ minutes.

PCMR stands a bit above the other 2 IMHO because Jupiter Bowl is more like the Cottonwoods in terms of both snow and terrain.

The topography is a little different in that much of PCMR is developed along one long ridgleline, while the Canyons and Deer Valley are more a series of individual peaks. Once you get past the front part of PCMR, almost all the runs and lifts are 1200 vertical or less, where as much of Deer Valley is 1200 or more. The Canyons has 6 different peaks with at least 1400 vertical. And 9990 has cottonwood like snow and terrain too, but with 50% more vertical than Jupiter. But there are some long run outs at the Canyons, especially when going from one side of the resort to the other.
