you guys gotta see this, its unbelievable. Has anyone ever heard of something like this before? Its shaping up to be a crazy winter, hope it will be safer in the future tho(like no people injured by this kinda stuff).
http://www.chauvinguides.com/PhotoArchive/condphotoarchive.cfm
~Les

Wow. Never seen one like that before. I hope the trails fared better. I thought MWV was spared most of the rain. Guess not.

On Saturday March 14, 1998 I was on my annual Snowbird trip enjoying a warm day of t-shirt skiing. About 2PM the intense sun loosened Tanner's Slide, a steep south-facing slope overlooking the Little Cottonwood road. The slide swept a car off the road (no injuries) and it was blocked until 7PM. Snowbird extended all lift operations by half an hour to delay the inevitable traffic jam.

Tony, I know where you mean. I went to Snowbird (my first mountain out west!) in '00, and I remember seeing those massive avalanche chutes. I thought that it was scary as hell to have a road going right under them, but when you think about it, its about the same exposure on both sides of little cottonwood. Something like the event that you mentioned would be expected. I was just surprised that soemthing like this happened at the BASE of WILDCAT, an EASTERN ski resort. "welcome to crazy world," as they say.

Just so you guys know Mount Washington reported 4.1 inches of rain. That is an enourmas amount considering they probably had close to 40 inches of settled snow.

porter
