Perhaps admin should reread the thread. The existence of a chair on a 1988 trail map did not prove that it was built before 1987. Egieszl's later post from the L.A. Times was what clarified the build date. After that post I admitted my error, as noted with some embarrassment. #-o

Which is more than can be said for some people on this forum, who don't let a huge amount of facts get in the way of their anecdotal preconceived notions. :snowball fight: How have you been enjoying the last 3 weeks of mid-January Salt Lake inversions?

Stand back, everyone -- give them some room.

Really? Where was that embarrassment demonstrated?

And I won't even bother to address how you've once again twisted my January inversion observations to suit your needs.

Tony, I skied Southern California ski areas way more than you did in the 80s and 90s.

I never said Chair 8, Bear Peak Triple opened on December 28, 1986. The Los Angeles Times article basically says that Goldmine would open the chair at some point in the season. The article is focusing on "What's New" not an actual opening date. However, the article implies that the chair may have operated for a very limited time during the 85-86 season. I know for a fact that a friend of mine skied the chair in mid-to-late February 1987.

Goldmine had snowmaking on Bear Peak from the time the lift was installed, but their water was limited to the three storage ponds and what they could pump out of wells to replenish that supply.

I think it's time you just admit that you were wrong.

That trail map is not dated. It was published before the 1988-89 season because that was the first season the mountain was called Bear Mountain. This Goldmine ski map could have been from either 85-86, 86-87, or the 87-88 season.

I'm sure the  gallery here will be delighted to learn that I was wrong on both counts. The L.A. Times confirmed the build date.

That late February storm was the first likely time for actual operation, so I dug up my archives today:

Feb. 28, 1987: Sunny until 2PM. Excellent powder & pp surface over thin or no base. Skier traffic > icy subsurface + many rocks by PM. New ch8 good AM, almost unskiable by 3PM. Untracked powder near ch4.

One of the virtues of skiing perhaps is that some of us remember the highlights of a day more than the low points. I went to Baldy on the "B" weekend in March. I may have gone to Goldmine on the late February weekend to ski Geronimo for the first time.

Average 5.6 days per season those 2 decades, only 3 per season since then.

I think that I'm going to print and frame that post!

And I'll print and frame the post where admin admits the Utah mid-January dry spell is not any more likely than during many other parts of the ski season. Oh, wait, we haven't seen that one yet.
