Steep, the documentary

This is a movie I WANT to see since I heard about it. Found the trailer. :o

STEEP is a feature documentary about bold adventure, exquisite athleticism and the pursuit of a perfect moment on skis. It is the story of big mountain skiing, a sport that barely existed 35 years ago.

It started in the 1970s in the mountains above Chamonix, France, where skiers began to attempt ski descents so extreme that they appeared almost suicidal. Men like Anselme Baud and Patrick Vallencant were inspired by the challenge of skiing where no one thought to ski before. Now, two generations later, some of the world's greatest skiers pursue a sport where the prize is not winning, but simply experiencing the exhilaration of skiing and exploring big, wild, remote mountains.

STEEP features many of the sport's greatest athletes including Bill Briggs, Stefano De Benedetti, Eric Pehota, Glen Plake, Shane McConkey, Seth Morrison, Chris Davenport, Ingrid Backstrom and Andrew McLean.

The man who is often described as the greatest big mountain skier of all, the late Doug Coombs, is the character at the center of STEEP. He died in a skiing accident in La Grave, France, in April, 2006, just days after being filmed for STEEP. His rich life and tragic death reveal the essential question at the heart of big mountain skiing: How does a skier weigh the risks versus the rewards of a sport where the possibility of dying is ever-present?

STEEP was shot on High Definition and on film in Alaska, Wyoming, Canada, France and Iceland.

Sony Pictures sent me an advance copy early this fall. It's exceptional - go see it.

I want to buy it!!!! When I'm thinking that Morgane and I are going to see Warren Miller next Tuesday.

It should be on DVD next Summer. Sony went to great lengths to ensure that those of us who received advance copies can't distribute it.

There was an advance screening in West Hollywood on Nov. 13. Someone sent me an e-mail heads-up so I went. The producer was there, along with Andrew MacLean and Ingrid Backstrom for Q & A afterwards. Audience was more general film buffs than skiers, as one could tell by some questions. For example, someone asked Ingrid, "Are you the only woman who does this?"

The film was shot mostly during 2006 and Doug Coombs was perhaps the most quoted interviewee. His death is revealed about 3/4 of the way through the film, though one questioner picked up on an interview subject speaking of Doug in the past tense earlier.

My impression was that Steep would be in general theatrical release starting Dec. 21, like the big wave surfing film Riding Giants (also highly recommended) was in 2005. But maybe not, from the list Patrick posted.

Wonderful link, Patrick. I saw the film! That clip is a good representation of the content and the spirit of the film. Being a live long skier who loves the life, I really enjoyed it, even if I am not an extreme skier!

Carol (goody two shoes patroler!).

I just checked and it's not on their website, but Steep will be playing in Ottawa's Bytowne Cinema. I just saw the program for January/February.

Here are the dates...(not on the Bytowne website yet)

February 29-March 4

http://www.bytowne.ca/

Good, very good.

I saw it last night. Definitely a must for those interested in the history of extreme skiing. Not necessarily a complete picture, but it gave a good sense of it.

The most touching part are the interviews with Doug Coombs talking about the risks and dying skiing. :? He died later that Winter.

It's playing in Ottawa until Tuesday (tomorrow).

I agree with your remarks, 100%. He took responsibility for his way of life. No blaming. He lived the way he chose to. Awesome guy, very much missed and loved.
