That is very true Tony, although I would counter that be stressing that the average skier or boarder will, on an average day pay $80 at a major resort and ski the same one or two lifts and typically not ski enough of the area to get value for money. ie, they typically ski an area around the size of some of these smaller mountains for twice the price and more. On a trip lasting a month I have to budget a bit here and there too :D

rfarren, I already stated that it was about opinions. If we all had the same one Big Sky would be busy and all other resorts would be closed. Its not all about the actual skiing when I compare them.

I don't think the 2100 v 614 acres is sidecountry Tony. IMO what they are saying is that the resort boundary contains 2100 acres of which only a third is skiable do to the dense forest that most of the trails on the front side of Rumsey and Jubilee are cut from. Perhaps Discovery are a resort that want to give an honest assessment of their terrain unlike others.

For the record here's my list. European resorts could be expanded due to the nature of the beast but I will keep it minimal  Don't think I'd be ahead of you Tony.

Magic and Elko are clearly not worth the trouble with backtracking to SLC. Why not substitute a quality Utah out-of-the-way place like Sundance or Powder Mt?

Good flexibility to choose where to ski while based in Reno or South Tahoe. If it's hot and slushy, leave a lttle early and spend more time at Mammoth/June.

Ski June on the way into Mammoth from Tahoe, not out as you're backtracking if going to Vegas next. I'd allow a whole day for Mammoth to Vegas to poke around Death Valley on the way.

FYI March 31, 2001 was the day I skied Arizona Snowbowl. It was deserted and had great corn. I'd allow another day there for the Grand Canyon.

Big Jazz fan 8) I have a 2-1 record having seen them beat the Lakers and Golden State and with the current run I expect them to roll past the Raptors on the 17th. Meeting a local that posts on my forum for the game and hopefully a days skiing the following day.

Look out for a red Nike shell jacket, Dynastar Legend 4800 skis and an owner normally found skiing off piste, eyeing up local talent and sinking a beer in the lodge

Cheers for the advice Tony, main reason regarding Mammoth/June was fact having been there previously I was worried that it would be busy at Mammoth during the weekend or I'd probably just ski both days at Mammoth if you dont think it would be too bad?

At this stage I aim to ski every day although some days, like at Vegas, its likely to be more a morning only. That said, I know that every year I plan to ski every day and something comes up or the weather does not play ball so a few days off will come along :D

All my motels can be cancelled without charge so I can be very flexible.

What do you do that allows that amount of time off?

Work in the European Union. My friends there do not know how to use their 6+ or ++ weeks off. Job loss? You get 2 years of severance in France.

Startups I have worked for - it is easier to just run out of money than lay off a French (or other Euro) workforce if you are not going to make it. You are going to be paying them anyways....

I'm a Chef for a college.. 7 weeks paid , could be worse...
unfortunately my wife gives me a honey do list a mile long

That Swiss guy "Paedde" from TGR does a six-week roadtrip every winter... goes from the Alps, to Japan, to the U.S.

I've always wondered how economies across the pond stay solvent with those employment regulations.

Well, q's site is called offthebeatenpath.com.uk. So I assume there are considerations going on for some of the choices.

RE: Elko. I generally shove 2-3 quarters in the slot machine in Elko at the gas station while I cross my legs/dance waiting for a friend to get OUT of the bathroom...not really ski in Elko.

I would probably see the Grand Canyon for a day versus a lot of these things. Hell, even the craziness of Vegas is worth a night. SW Colorado is especially good this year.

Looking at q's 'final' schedule, I note that he has not yet hit Silverton or Durango in Colo yet.

Not sure what level of skiing you are doing, q, but southwest Colorado is having a banner year for snowpack. Personally/for me on a trip like that, I'd chop a day or two off the Frisco stay and hit places like Silverton and Crested Butte as you are coming in from Arizona.

Those areas take a ton of snow to be good, and this is one of those years that they are good. Snow in the central Colo mtns is fine this year too, but not nearly as above average as SW Colo...

I wholeheartedly support the recommendations of EMSC and ChrisC for the same reasons. And for someone who likes "off-the-beaten track," Summit County is the antithesis of that. q will like the SW Colorado vibe better, as well as having better skiing.

Only two "resorts" I ain't hit yet in Colorado are SIlverton and Beaver Creek. I want to hit Silverton with a friend at some point rather than on my todd. Probably hit either Telluride, CB or Durango again on the way from Flagstaff to Frisco.

As mentioned already my site is called OTBP hence my destinations. haha.

So far....

11th and 12th - Discovery - Hard Pack
13th - Maverick - Worse than cement - Kelly Canyon - 6" fresh for night skiing :D
14th - Soldier Mountain - Beautiful sunny skies
15th - Magic Mountain - 12" of fresh powtastic pow :D 8)
16th - Wolf Mountain - skied afternoon after car key problem....
17th - Snowbasin - powtastic
18th - Brighton
19th - Snowbird with Javier :D
20th - Mt Rose - Nice chutes
21st - The Four Hill Challenge
22nd - Homewood and Granlibakken - great views at Homewood, very warm.
23rd - Sugar Bowl - Nice mountain
24th - Northstar
25th - Diamond Peak
26th - Kirkwood 8) 8) 8) 8)
27th - This morning at Sierra-at-Tahoe

28th - Possibly June or Mammoth
29th - Day off to travel through Death Valley and other sites
30th - Ski Las Vegas in the morning then head to Flagstaff
31st - Ski Arizona Snowbowl
1st April thru 9th skiing in Colorado :D

Bring on some pow in CO.....

Snowbird one day, Mt. Rose the next? That's some serious driving, especially solo.

Four hill challenge?

Adam was at Heavenly 3/21, Squaw 3/22, not sure where today, Kirkwood 3/28 and Mammoth this weekend. Not quite crossing paths. The 4 days off were due to Molly's ACL surgery.

Silverton should probably be done guided the first time anyway, you should definitely go there. We know you're well acclimated by now. SW Colorado has a big snowpack but hasn't seen much in March. 3 inches so far at Wolf Creek. I-70 has been doing better. It should be a good time to add Beaver Creek to your list.

31st March denied by AZ Snowbowl. Rant to follow perhaps regarding thier position regarding snowmaking.....

1st April, Copper Mtn, 12" 2nd day pow.
2nd April, Vail, 1" overnight. Nice stuff!

Tomorrow, I hope to make it to Beaver Creek...

Kirkwood was the one hill in Reno/Tahoe that I'd return to.

Q,

Yeah, but that doesn't include Alpine or Squaw, does it?

I agree with both the above thoughts:
1. Traveling from across the pond, Kirkwood is perhaps the one worth returning to someday.
2. Not sure if Q skied Alpine or Squaw (or even Heavenly) - but those are worth repeats. Just looking at his list, I find it a funny omission.

I think the point and criteria of his travels are to ski places "off-the-beaten path". However, this would not be my criteria for ski choices.

Conversely, I have employed the opposite strategy when traveling to Europe - focused on skiing the big, name-brand, off-piste/expert ones: Chamonix, Val d'Isere, 3 Valleys, Verbier, Zermatt. And was able to ski a few smaller ones along the way.
