utah refugee needs help selecting tahoe season pass

i was looking for a place as close to kirkwood as possible, or on the shuttle bus line.

fwiw, the peak pass at heavenly is 579 and includes vail, etc for no additional $$

Down in the Carson Vallley (Minden/Gardnerville) might be way cheaper. Similar distance to Kirkwood as SLT, 20 mins to Stagecoach Heavenly base, 1 hr to Mt. Rose. Substantially farther than SLT only to Sierra-at-Tahoe. I stay in Carson Valley myself if it's a peak time like President's weekend. Difference in rent price might buy you that Heavenly/Colorado Pass in addition to the one at Kirkwood.

thanks for the housing suggestion tony. looking at craigslist there doesnt seem to be all that much difference in price for rentals. but even if there were, i want to be able to take the shuttle bus from slt rather than drive. i dont have 4wd and i hate chains.i would rather spend time in the kirkwood parking lot which i hear is allowed than drive that road twice a day.

yuuup. the only time i've ever skied mt. rose was the same year i skied squaw with 100" new & mt. rose was past your nose. the place has a higher base than most other resorts in the sierra's 8200' gives them drier pow than what is to there west & being on the east side of the sierra's gives the moisture some time to ring out coming east

I was looking at Kirkwood's website to see if they reported any snow and saw they had some Dec. 1 - Apr. 30 ski leases. There is one 1 bedroom/1 bath condo in a good location for $2,000/month plus utilities, 2 @ $3,000/month and 3 @ $7,200/month. See http://www.kirkwood.com/winter/lodgingleases.php

Given that you don't have 4WD or like chains, I would not recommend staying in Kirkwood's parking lot or driving from South Tahoe or Minden.

If you're spending a whole season at Tahoe, you need to get real about the chains/4WD. If you want the big powder days, you have to choose your poison and be prepared in advance, especially if Kirkwood is your area of choice. Public transit is not as convenient as those lots at the base of LCC/BCC. And snow clearance is more difficult with the longer distances and heavier snow. The chain/4WD control can be in place for days at a time, not just a few hours.

thanks for your advice tony. i do realize that snow is a big problem on that road. thats why gardenerville wont work for me. and i doubt that i can find a place at kirkwood. south tahoe might work with the shuttle-bus. but my fall back is to get to kirkwood before a storm and stay there . camping is ok according to kirkwood officials. when the skiing is no good, ill find something else to do at south tahoe or i have friends up near truckee. now, any advice on skis?
