Weather this week in Utah ??

Who do you trust for longer range SLC mountains forecasts? I'm considering a trip around March 5-8 or so, probably in Ogden area.

No one. Certainly not longer than a week out, and even a week is stretching it.

It's an interesting study of perception when it comes to skiing powder. Time after time you see these kind of posts on ski boards regarding a real angst over whether there will be powder during that one week window someone has booked months in advance, with a real discernable dissapointment if it doesn't snow. I know, I was that way too when I lived away from quick access to the mountains. On the flip side, are those of us that live in snow country, where the opportunity for powder is greatly enhanced, and there is almost a jaded thing going on where it has to be a huge dump to even get our pulses up. I personally welcome a short break from all the snow. A little subshibe and warmth would be a welcome relief to the day and night drudgery of blowing my driveway for the past two months.

Once you've done a few of these trips, plus in my case seen some numbers, you realize that the "powder angst" is silly when your odds of getting it booked months in advance are maybe 20-30%. The best advice I can give is to avoid bucking the odds of poor conditions (ie. Taos early season, Jackson in March, etc.) and otherwise enjoy what you get.

If you want to move the powder odds over that 20-30% there are only 2 ways to do it, short notice (less than a week) trips or pay up for the cat or heli.

or cheaper. get some climbing skins. when i was working nights at solitude a buddy of mine came out to visit me in march 01' for 3 weeks and i swear it did not snow one inch the whole time he was there. he brought his split board and skied untracked the whole time 21 days in a row under a cooler than normal high pressure. as long as we stayed off of south aspects all else was deluxe. lots of evening recrystalization at night kept pow great. it did help that i know the wasatch bc better than i should. we never did a resort day cuz there were tracks present and no pow. then from april 2-11th that year a nother buddy came out and it snowed 75 inches and we did 75% resort days.
the wasatch bc is easy to explore cuz what you see is what you can ski in the right conditions, that is of course if ya don't mind walkin. i'm sure there are guide books as well.

icelantic,

I have been considering bc, but am not ready to sink a lot of $ into equipment yet. I have a normal alpine setup with regular boots and middle of the road parabolic skis. What would you recommend for gear to get started in bc? I don't think skins work unless you have some way to free your heel on ascents, right?

thanks.

That rather depends on how masochistic you are. Bob Dangerous skins on alpine gear, opening the buckles to simulate the free cuff of AT boots.

Whatever you do resist the temptation to buy Alpine Trekkers. They're heavy and slow, and that money is best spent toward real AT gear.

Scour eBay, Craigslist, SteepAndCheap.com, etc. and you just may score a deal on boots and bindings. Once you do you'll never look back.

the only thing i use that's AT are my fritchi bindings for touring so, that cuts down on the cost right there. skins can be found for 100 bucks or less. my friend has done week long chic choc trips w/ trekkers and loves em and has no problems with em as he was lookin into gettin in on the action on the cheap. anything that'll allow you to free the heel so that you can slide one foot in front of the other will work. when yer saving 60 bucks on a lift ticket where it's skied down conditions to ski for free in untracked pow the last thing on my mind is, "oh no, my langes are 12 pounds and i wish i had a dynafit set up" that won't suffice for some resort use. i keep it easy with always one set-up for both. when yer staring up at endless untracked i doubt yer gonna be thinkin about the weight about your stuff especially when just getting into it. pm me for gear deals and i'll even waive tax and shipping.
