Little survey :

Are you going to ski :

1) Travel with airplane to ski in a place where there is real terrain ?

2) Stay in the east and ski the big ones (Killington, Stowe, Sunday River, Sugarloaf, etc)

3) Ski in the enough big ones that are less crowded (say "Yes"... but don't give names (of mountains) if it's your situation !!!!)

4) Ski the little mountains that will be very crowded ?

5) Ski the unknown little mountains that won't be too much crowded ?

6) Backcountry skiing (the best way to never wait to take a chairlift)

7) No ski at all... just too much crowded !!

8) Go wherever the best snow is

Personnaly, I'm somewhere between #3 and #5. Considering that there will be probably less than 100 persons tomorrow at La Réserve for 17" of powder (no rain there I think), I don't really care to say that I'm going there.

This weekend, I may ski Shefford. It's not sure cause they only got 6" of snow after all the rain. It risks to freeze in ice, so if it looks bad, it will be La Réserve all the way. May be Mt Alta could open this weekend. If so... there is chances of 101,9% to see me there.

I hope to not wait more than 2-3 minutes on a chairlift during the holidays ;)

My family will do 1 and 6 this holiday season, however I wont be able to ski with them.

A normal holiday however would be 3, 5, & 6.

porter

Ish poor you... it's true
congrats to stay alive even without ski and with all those storms.

I will dedicate my 1st powder run to you, tomorrow ! (Chute Libre on the way !!)

Thanks Salida. I'll take a few pics of that, too ;)

Marc : You mean : Go to the places where the most snow will be ?

If so : you can edit my post to add this 8th good choice (I forgot it) ;)

ALTA OPENS SATURDAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TO CONFIRM, BUT I JUST GOT AN E-MAIL OF THE GM TO TELL ME THAT THEY HAD ENOUGH SNOW TO OPEN... SATURDAY OR AT WORST MONDAY/TUESDAY

IF THEY OPEN SATURDAY... DON'T WONDER WHERE I'M GOING TO BE !!!!!!

I'll be doing 1-6 this year. Although I'll actually be "coming to" the East rather than "staying in".

As someone who often travels from the Rockies to New England I can honestly say that you guys shouldn't feel that you have to fly to get "real terrain". Sure, there are a lot of things that you can't find in the east, but many of the things you do have can't be found anywhere else! Like ice! No, I'm kidding....for instance the Northeast has some of the most beautifully forrested backcountry.

See you on the slopes.
Cliff

Going to Tremblant tomorrow for 3 days of skiing (Sat,Sun, Mon).Guess that would classify in the Staying in the east and skiing the big mountians category. I think that it may be PACKED this weekend with the end of school crowds.

My corp. announced a total shutdown the week before xmas. Looking like I'll sneak off by myself for day trip to mrg or bush, before the schools get out for vaca. Poor me, all my skiing buds still must work, but...someone has to do it...

My motto "ski it when you can", admittedly blatant theft from MRG, but no truer words were ever spoken.

Thanks Marc for the edit. I choose also the number 8 combined with 3 and 5 !!

Tremblant this weekend : good luck !
At least, they got 7" of snow yesterday and no rain on the upper mountain I think.

Actually, there is about 45 open trails, but this should move up to 50-60 this weekend I guess... as they will make a lot of snow until saturday. With enough lifts and trails, this should be potable.

Cliff... yeah, you're right that we get some spots that even the west doesn't have (ice spots is just so much true, though !) but many people will still prefer the terrain in the West and I can understand them !

Brian : I hope that Crotched will be nice, after all those years without operating. I guess this will be a lot of great souvenirs for you to ski on that mountain !!

Bill : nice to work in a company like that !! I totally agree with your motto !!

I'm hoping for #5.Up the Sherburne and maybey into Left Gully.

http://www.chauvinguides.com/PhotoArchive/skicondphotoarchive.cfm
My new Fritschis are burning a hole in my floor waiting to be used. You can bet i've been skining around my yard at night trying to cool them off. It's a good thing the nieghbors already know i'm a bit different.
((*
*))NHPH

Hahaha Mt Washington = LITTLE, UNKNOWN mountain, NOT CROWDED

for those who don't know, even with the 2500' high to hike to reach the bottom of the ravine, sometimes in spring there is 3000-4000 persons in the ravine... enough amazing. It was very crowded when I went to the mountain during last august, too.

Yeah, left Gully looked skiable a couple of days ago... so with this last storm, it should be nice now ! Hopefully they got snow in the mountain this week. I'm not sure that I would ski the ravine at this time of the year, though...

When I was up on sunday morning the headwall was a series of vertical yellow ice waterfalls. As many trips as ive had up there it still amazes me the transformations that take place from late summer til the headwal fills in with snow.To look at the headwall from the top of the Lion Head in august you would think it would be impossible to have enough snow to make that vertical wall of rock skiable. Then to go back and see it again in march all filled in and very skiable, well it must be a miracle! Now looking at it,it seems like there is so much snow that it will be around till november! But alas, the next transformation takes only a few months to expose all that rock again.I always feel very fortunate to live here in New Hampshire.Jay Peak wouldnt be a bad place to retire though.
((*
*))NHPH

Yeah, Sven sent me a pic of the Headwall from Lion's Head, yesterday, and it's really looking impossible to even think about skiing there (it was in mid-june, so still some skiing to do on the lower part of the ravine)

When I hiked it last summer, It was weirdly looking like if the Lip was the steepest place of the ravine... The center headwall was looking quite less steep. Funny that it's the opposite in spring ;)

I'm eager to try it next spring !

i've decided to take my split back to NH with me and try to do some bc while i'm there. i've been looking at some of the "lost ski areas" of NH and the one i first ever rode at is now closed(King Ridge). closed in '95 and i never knew it. it's the place where you park at the top of the hill. i'm thinking about doing some riding and skinning up there, but if my memory serves me corectly it is not much of a challenging place to ride. (NHPH- what else is a prospect for me in southern and central NH?) it'll be a solo mission for me, so no av terrain like tucks. i'm also thinking about going to Crotched because it's so close to Nash Vegas, which is where i'm coming from. another prospect will be cannon, and i think that's the one on the top of my list right now. i'm only back for a week, so i'll see what i can get done in that short span of time. hopefully all of it, but i know my freinds will get me obliterated(hey, it's the holidays) and i'll slack off......just like old times. ha ha. happy holidays.
