What kind of mountains will you ski during the holidays ?

Frank,

I don't know where my plans fall into your list.

We are basically going where our friends are (in Lake Placid) and there happens to be a big mountain near by...Whiteface, and, they have good conditions. We are hoping that the precipitation forecasted for weds/thurs is snow. But even if it's not, there will be good skiing up there, as there is plenty of base and if its on the warmer side, the snow will be soft.

Whiteface also rarely gets very crowded, even on the holidays. I think its a good choice, not to mention that we have free lodging and 25% discount on lift tix during the prime holiday season.

If you scroll down to the last pic on this page
http://www.firsttracksonline.com/whiteface2003.htm
you will see the house we are staying in. Marc took that picture last year. My friend bought that house in September!

BTW, they rent out half that house. It sleeps 12 and is nicely furnished and has everything you'd need. $600 for the weekend, great location, as you can see. We can see the ski jumpers from the hot tub!

-Sharon

I have pretty much sworn off destination trips during the Christmas-to-New Year's period for cost/crowd reasons. I've done it twice with poor results.

I do feel somewhat left out at this point, living in one of the very few regions in North America (Southern California) with a poor start to the season. My first Mammoth trip will be MLK weekend. My son is at Big Bear today, but only because he's on break and it's the last day to use a free ticket from the L.A. Ski Show. But the Big Bear areas are only 35% open with no advanced runs except terrain park features.

But I will make up for lost time in February/March: Fernie, Island Lake, Banff, Chamonix, Snowbird, Aspen, Telluride, Silverton.

I'll be skiing really tiny local hills in the flatlands of Ontario. While it's a given that I'll be the only telemarker there, I'm torn as to if I should take my super-fat powder skis, or my ultra-lightweight backcountry touring skis with the lightweight boots...

"No, they're not really cross-country skis."
"Yes, they have metal edges."
"Yes, they have a saftey retention device."

Should be good for a giggle. It'll likely be more fun than the actual skiing, come to think of it.
