Congrats on getting things running again, Marc. Consider the crash a blessing in disguise in that you may not have switched to phpBB otherwise. I think your members are going to really enjoy the new software after they get used to it. We've been using phpBB since 2001 (version 1.4) and it's been rock-solid. If you ever need any help on customization or setting up an automated backup scheme, feel free to ask. Best of luck with the new board.

However this new software might look better and do cool stuff, but the content is more important in my eyes. That's why that FTO was always number 1 ski site for me.

So personally, like Tony said, if the trade off is losing a ton of archives of amazing reports and stories for a flasher look then  . Anyway, I loved skiing at Mad River Glen and I have an old Mac at home plus I am a member of a ski museum so this might explain where I am coming from.

PS. My old Mac doesn't all these new flasher BBSs.

Not to concentrate on the negative, congrats once again Marc for getting whole thing running again.

I hear ya, Patrick. Another popular NE-hiking forum, Views from the Top, had a few crashes during the past year or so, resulting in a complete loss of data. The same thing happened to EpicSki and AC (Epic's admin) went to a similar forum software as this (vBulletin). Both of those forums are now going strong. The loss of the general ski discussion is certainly a bummer, but the loss of last and prior season's ski trip reports is not that big of a deal as the information is negligible for this upcoming season. In a few months, things should be humming right along here.

Let's hope so... about the humming.

As for the old stuff, I know I kept refering to it now and then. And I know I am not the only one (registered or not).

agreed patrick, i think most of the regulars referrenced FTO forums for historical purposes from time to time. i think we will really notice the loss of content more down the road though. looking back 10+ years or more, some of that information could be priceless in tracing history of eventual lost areas and trail changes.

on the plus side going forward, the search feature of phpBB is really great.

Well, reference to your heart's content, for we've managed to recover everything through June 4, 2004! The archives are now located here.

:D Awesome! The archives are restored. My links to them need to be changed but that will be easy.

And the picture uploading is back too, with a higher quality limit.

I'm extremely impressed how quickly Marc responded to my (and other) critiques of last week.

Congrats Marc !! BRAVO !!

I'm really happy to see them back, as these conversations are some of the best references (if not the best at all) for the backcountry skiing in the East + What a shame it would be to lose all the fire comments of Joegm from the last years

Wait a minute...first JimG became a member of the Jamaican bobsled team, now Laval has suddenly moved from Québec to France??

.... ah..... the system misses the greatest of all flags (in my heart)

Just laughing of course... no need to start a political conversation ;)

Great job getting the archives back! They are invaluable, esp. such things as the historic pics in the ASC/Kmart end-of-season threads (an annual tradition?).

HOURRAH!!!! :D :P

GREAT JOB MARC!!!!

Add one Andorran to the Jamaican bobsled team member and the mysteriously relocated Québecois.

Great job restoring the archives Marc! As for the Jamaican flag reference, I commend you on your sharp perception. I figured it would take a few days for anyone to notice. My wife is Jamaican; listening to Bob Marley and drinking Red Stripe beer is about as close to being Jamaican as I'll ever get!

As for Andorra, the skiing is definately better than in Jamaica.

As for the flag thing, not that I am a un-patriotic Canadian, I was trying to be original. If everyone use their country flag, it would be mostly all American with the odd Canadian flag. If the flags would be state/provincial they their would be more diversity and would be educational  (everyone knows what the US or Canadian flag looks like). You see, I don't only promote diversity in skiing, but also in flags... (hey, I am geographer, what can I say!!!).

I love Canada, but I guess we don't like the excess on nationalism that many of us see on TV, movies, media which a lot of it comes from south of us. Sorry, this is not a jab, but an observation especially close to the US Presidential Election and experiences on being associated to the Americans in the Alpes in March 2003.

Congrats on the restore! Now you have the best of both worlds: the ability to search the archives and a new BBS system to move forward with.
