And in case anyone is wondering why I'm so anal retentive about this, the board posting problems that some of you were experiencing last weekend were due to the server's drive getting full. That's why.
i hadn't noticed any issues over here. if the drive is getting full, would you prefer links to off site images if available? i really took to the in post images with captions and utilized it heavily this season, but i can link to my own server in the posts if that would help with space issues.

Glad you didn't notice! And no, keep them inline if you can - that's the whole point. I managed to free up 25% for now, and we'll just buy a bigger drive from our web host when it comes down to that. I just wanted to explain why we have the limits that we do with respect to image file sizes, uploading video, etc.

word. the file size restriction on photos is very reasonable here. there really isn't a need for a larger photo size than 480x360 and most photos at that size get down to 60k or below without mucking with the compression ratio. for my own web site, i always upload around 475x316 which gets the job done nicely without a huge draw on bandwidth.

Not only that, but images wider than 480 pixels muck up the tables and cause a user to have to scroll horizontally to see the rest of the image.

marc , with steve's help i am using the irfanview photo editor.. i ahve amnaged to shrink all the photos to the pixel size you said to do.. but they still won't go up ( i get a message that they are bigger than 60. i would assume this has to do with the jpeg compression... i just can't figure out , with the irfan view , how to shirnk the compression to 70%. can anyone help me out with that with specifically what to click on. this is driving me mad as i have trying to do this for 2 weeks now...
i also don't wnat to screw up the board so i am hesitant to continue to try and force the issue
also, i have over 100 pictures ... what is the number you want me to keep it at if i am ever able to figure this out.. thanks

You can find a userguide to Irfanview in PDF here. One of the first things they cover is JPEG compression -- it's the "Save Quality" option slider in the "Save as" dialog. Set that slider at 70 for for an image sized 480x360 pixels.

Anything more than about 15 pics on a single topic slows down display of the topic significantly.

I find the new boards easier to size pics than the old. My 3 megapixel camera takes pics at 2048 x 1536. I use the plain vanilla MS Paint that comes with every PC, go to Image, Stretch/Skew and multiply both vertical and horizontal x 23%; thus the resulting image is 471 x 353. FTO accepts these 99% of the time.

i used irfanview photo editor to shirnk all the pics to the pixel size marc said to. but they still won't go up. when i put them up the message says " too big- larger than 60kb. i assume this has to do with marc telling me to shrink to 70% jpeg compression. a few of the pics are under 60 but most are betweeen 65 and 85. i have been trying for a week to figure out how to do this on the irfan view but can't seem to figure it out... anyone know specifically how to do this

marc i just got your very detailed message on the irfanview... i didn't notice it.. thanks i'll try that
