A perfect spring day:

We were on the lifts at 10:15 and temps warmed up to the lower 50s at the summit... needless to say, the corn was ripe. Skied until 3:45 and it was only slopped out in a few spots:

Heading up to The Slides. My pic of Cheez Blintz on the Slide 1 waterfall didn't come out.

Looking forward to tomorrow when two FTOers join us:

As Whiteface become the FTO's Eastern version of the West's Alta FTO reports???

How many WF TRs in the last week?

Kudos to Sharon and James for getting of these TRs with pics.

If its open I'll be up there on the 20th. Should've been the 13th but they are calling for rain. Not that I was expecting snow, but the whole point of spring, is fun in the sun and getting to watch the lady ski in a tank top.

Sorry, Charlie... like most ski areas, Whiteface's last day is April 13. Can't imagine they're taking in much in the way of revenues right now. Most of the people there were from Quebec taking advantage of the bargain basement exchange rate.

I hadn't skied there in five years and forgot how much vertical there is. They've already cut three or four new trails on the north side and are putting in the HSQ this summer.

After blowing out of work at 2:30 yesterday and driving to our place in North River, I was excited and anxious to get a shot at the slides. It was not to be.

We asked whoever we could find...what is up with the slides? Nobody knew, or would say. After a few runs on the summit quad and little face, skipat at the top gave us the bad news....slides are closed FOR THE SEASON.

James, his buddy Steve, Patrick and I made the best of it. I didn't look at the map much so I'm not sure of the names of alot of what we did. I'll leave the TR to James. But here is what I do know:

Slightly overcast but somehow sunny... things were corning up nicely by 9:58  when we loaded onto the facelift. Hit Upper Skyward, Cloudspin and some stuff on LW. One tree run was open, and the cover was dicey in the there. Lost lots of snow since yesterday, according to J and S. For me, highlights were the bumps on Upper and Lower Mac, the obstacle course on Empire and Blazers Bluff. By the end of the day we were, at times, water skiing in runoff.

Patrick rips. He's super smooth through big corny bumps. And he THRIVES on steepness. I had a tough time keeping up with both Pat and James and I was whipped by beer thirty.

Great to meet you guys - and thanks for letting me invite myself along.

My camera died. Possibly in response to some impacts. I did get a few pics out of it:

Sorry to correct you, but the Suunto S6 log was started in the chair as we were going up at 9:58.

The travel time is 3 hour, I guess the traffic and customs this morning made for a longer travel time. I need to go shave now before the Habs start their playoff run.

One last look for posterity. From today at Whiteface:

Apparently due to the extreme warmth the icefall at the top of the slides broke completely free. From the WF forum:

"(One) patroller said one of the falls on Slide 1 blew out and there was water gushing down the slide."

Maybe someone else would poach that...not me, having never had been in there. And the entrance point is a very public spot. Sharon's pic of AC taken at the entrance wass taken just a few feet from the top of the summit quad.

Geez, I've never had an extreme close-up like that.

The beard's coming off???

I kept the goatee (sp?), still long, but not as long. The last time I shaved was back in October (maybe that would explain the Habs's season???). I have a university reunion on Saturday, so my wife was really on my case for a number of months about it, especially with the reunion coming up. If everything goes has planned, I'll shave again in 2 months after the hockey playoffs. :P

Mid-afternoon yesterday, at the top of the Little Whiteface double, there was a guy with a ZZ Top beard that was twice as long as Patrick's.

I thought about getting a pic of them together, but was worried that the other guy would punch me out.
