    Summit County airport shuttle

Yes, EMSC, you're right that going by shuttle isn't a big money saver compared to renting a regular car. But we've got 2 couples, which means we'd need to rent a big SUV, and the rental companies really rape you on those -- in the neighborhood of $1,000/ week! Plus my wife and I are staying...

    Summit County airport shuttle

Hi, we've finally decided to try going carless on a trip to Breck, and taking an airport shuttle instead of renting a car. This is a first for us, so I was just wondering if anyone has had any either very good or bad experiences with the 4 shuttle services that are operating from DIA. Thanks...

    Slides at Breck

My understanding from the cntext of my discussion with the patrol's son is that "triggered" means intentionally triggered. So, in addition to the one in the article, there was one other, which apparently did not affect any skiers.

    Slides at Breck

Yes, I just read the article that the grandson of Vail's founder was killed in an avi just slightly out of bounds on an eastern aspect near Vail. Have there been other in-bounds slides, other than the ones at Breck? BTW, they've been bombing the hell out of everything in Breck.

    Slides at Breck

This was our 3rd full day skiing Breck. Weather conditions last 2 days have been miserable (Sunday it was the temp, yesterday it was gale-force winds, which closed a lot of lifts and created huge lift lines), but surface conditions have been good. Today, the surfaces were showing the effects...

    Rogers Pass 12/31

Yep, we're feeling lucky this year. We're headed for Breck this Friday, and things are looking pretty good. We made the rez a month or so ago, but on Southwest Airlines, so we could change to SLC without penalty if CO was looking bad. (Also, if worse came to worst, we now have Wolf Creek as...

    forecasts

Yep, true that! No huge surprise. Still, it's interesting to see it quantified, and see what is the "breakeven point", when the forecast becomes a WORSE predictor than the long-term mean. For temps at least, that seems to be around 10 days out.

    forecasts

Interesting article posted by Joel Gratz on OPensnow about how a meteorology class looked at how weather forecasts of various lengths of time in the future performed against reality. They just looked at temperature predictions. They found that forecasts of more than about 10- 11 days in the...

    Colorado season opens for 13'-14'

Seems to me that the real story is Wolf Creek's opening this weekend on a 22" all natural base. If I lived in CO, I'd be tempted! They even say they're opening Alberta Peak area for hike-to, but with just 22", I can't believe that area will have sufficient coverage for anyone who cares about...

    epic pass suggestions

It's undoubtedly a good idea to wait as long as possible, and one option to keep in your back pocket is to book a flight (before fares skyrocket -- about 2 weeks out), but not any non-refundable rooms, then if conditions are good in Summit/ Vail, go there, or if not, take a look at Wolf Creek in...

Attn johnnash: Epic Pass Euro Privileges

Yep, these would be a bit pricey to get to, even from the East Coast, but if I get a biz trip across the Pond this winter, I'll be on it like a white duck on rice! \:D/

    Vail Resorts comes to Utah

Hey, guess what? I don't need to make that decision after all! Just got an email from Epic, and Canyons is included in Epic Local after all. \:D/ It's got the same holiday restrictions as Vail, BC, Heavenly, etc., but that's OK. So I guess they decided to keep us ''in the family'' as you say.

    Vail Resorts comes to Utah

I got all excited when my wife sent me the announcement from Vail. This last season, it was really great for us to be able to ski Tahoe early season on our Epic Local Pass when Colorado got off to such a lousy start, and adding The Canyons would diversify the weather risk even more. But it...

    Deer Valley Monorail

There is one of these Hill Trac monorails running from the Ridge Tahoe condos to the Stagecoach lift at Heavenly. Sounds great in principle, but not so much in practice. It was kind of fun to ride as a novelty. But it was out of commission frequently, and you didn't discover this until you...

    Loveland, CO 3-24-13

Wow! I've never heard of a lift being closed for wind chill before. But then that was some storm over the weekend. We drove back to Denver Friday afternoon, after skiing Keystone that day. (Intended to hit A-basin, but Hwy 6 surface conditions were so bad -- from the small dump on Thursday...
