A-Basin vs. Ski Cooper for half day?

+1

Can we give the gratuitous marketing a rest?
Even the gratuitous marketer would surely agree GPaul should have chosen Easter rather than Christmas for Telluride.

How's that 14% of Telluride skiing today?

At the very least, I'm sure he can get himself some fine steak and beer for dinner. Worse places to be during Christmas than Telluride, I reckon.

Christmas week in Colorado is more diverse this year than last, when it was nearly all bad.

Steamboat has reasserted its early season reliability at 94% open on a 41 inch base, thanks to nearly 5 feet of snow since Dec. 16.

Vail/Beaver Creek are 2/3 open this year vs. 1/3 last year. That is still within the worst quartile of Christmas weeks but probably manageable.

Aspen, Breckenridge and Winter Park are half open vs. 1/3 or less last year. You might not want to be at these places this week, but with ongoing normal weather I'd expect few problems by mid-January.

Copper, Keystone, A-Basin and Loveland are all 1/3 or less open, about the same as last year at this time. Avoid until they get a lot more snow and terrain open.

Last year the Southwest had snow in December when the I-70 corridor did not. All of those areas are thus in worse shape this year and Wolf Creek is the only one close to full operation. Crested Butte has had more snow this year than last but has about the same 35% percent of terrain open. Telluride is at 25% this year vs. 57% last year.

Hola! VERY satisfied with 1/2 day Loveland on 18th, EXTREMELY satisfied with Vail/Beaver 19/20/21, DISSAPOINTED with Telluride 22-26 (and even if 100% open would not touch Vail/Beaver for LSG's), first day in Crested Butte, MARVELOUS!

Will post a TR on Epic later on.

Gracias and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!

??? Not much in the way of LSG's there. Loveland was 12% open on Dec. 16, 14% open on Dec. 23 and still only 20% open today.

Surface conditions should be good at CB with recent snow, but it's still only 548 out of 1547 acres open. Unless there was some kind of package deal including lift tickets, GPaul is paying ~$95 a day to ski the limited terrain at Crested Butte and Telluride. Normal practice at most ski areas is to black out those package deals during the holidays. GPaul's first page post mentions some tickets included at Vail/Beaver Creek, but of course that was BEFORE Christmas-to-New-Year's "zoo week." Caveat emptor for future season planning.

The final day of 2012 is also the final day of GPaul's trip. My just finished season progress report: http://173.193.223.192/~bestsnow/seas13.htm
Telluride opened chair 9 recently, but is still only 33% open today and GPaul left there a few days ago. Crested Butte remains at 35%.

Some of the Colorado percents open are up since Dec. 26, but the list of areas that are OK/improving vs. bad is still the same as in that post.

Thank you jamesdeluxe, but no worries, it´s just a crock-o-s... :-({|=

I stand by my previous post, and again HIGHLY PRAISE Crested Butte for my skiing likes: LSG. Didn't even notice the 1000 acres not open, perfect for 4 days. Met a bunch of townies who vacation in the DR. CB moves into my top-ten.

Last day we went to Snowmass but cut it to half-day (not even) due to a virus/flu that had me almost fainting in the plane. Skied 'bout 8 blues, and frankly they are not what I remember. LG, but not Steep.

So..... next Xmas looks like this:
A) Land and hang in Seattle 12/23,24, Cypress on 25th, other on 26th, Salt Spring Island 27th (visiting my twin), ski Mt. Washington 28-30, then WB 1/1-8.

B) Land SLC, ski 2 days, then on to Sun Valley and Jackson Hole (no Hobacks required) 4 days each, back for 3 more days in SLC, hopefully all at Snowbasin.

And here we go....

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Oh my God. Are we going to have another 5-page thread criticizing Gpaul's 2013/2014 ski itinerary?? Let's stop the madness.

No, both of those itineraries are pretty sensible, which we would have told GPaul in November if he had bothered to ask. Both would have worked out far better this year. Sun Valley is the quintessential GPaul LSG mountain and it had a spectacularly good early start to the 2012-13 season. Many years it's going to be mostly manmade snow but the snowmaking system is world class.

With regard to this year the advice came from 3 diverse sources:
1) Me with my snowfall/conditions/terrain open history, which I know annoys some of you.
2) EMSC, who actually lives in Colorado, so as a local source would presumably command a bit more respect.
3) Johnnash, a vacationing skier not from the West with family and overall preferences very similar to GPaul.

Respect that you repeatedly refuse to give to those of us who actually live in Utah.

Ahh, but Tony rarely skis in Colorado these days. So it's a whole lot tougher for him to argue about lift operations, terrain openings or other minutiae that he has relatively little recent experience with vs his extensive annual ski trips to Utah.

I note that I also pick apart Greek Peak in the East for example since I know it oh-so-well and continue to get 1st hand reports from there... Of course GP is somewhat unique in just how poorly it is run though...

You're just providing the Alta crew with more ammunition.

Actually the early season percents of terrain open I have for Front Range Colorado go back to 1988 from a former website that I fortunately downloaded while it was still around. For most places I only have that data since about 2003. These past 2 early seasons have been exceptionally bad even within the context of data back to 1988.

 Ha! But no, this time looking for more chimers-in =D>

Greek Peak was my very first ski experience (rather disaster). On my bucket list for whenever.

Tony, concur with LSG status of SV, I found it perfect last time (10 years ago).

Cheers all!
