jay peak has no powder

i wish all the talk about jay would just stop. roemer and everyone else , jay peak , best bet for powder, yah right. how about glare ice or is glacial more like it. i skied today and there is no coverage in the woods, the groomers are ice rinks, and the liftlines are horrendous. people you should look else where. all the hype has brought unheard of amounts of people to the mountain with which has below average conditions. i feel that you could do much better anywhere there are fewer people. we need snow , boat loads of it. there is no sign of it coming this way either. if you want powder get on a plane . simple as that. the east coast has no powder.

I don't see anyone trying to say that Jay has powder this week. It rained hard last week, and then got cold. Regardless of how much snow a resort will typically get, such a combination pretty much only leads to one result - depleted snowpack in the woods and icey groomers.
 
Best bet for skiing this weekend is to go where they make the most snow.

This past week was great for snowmaking, with the warmer weather coming, the man-made snow can turn to butter.

With all the snow I saw at Greek Peak on tues, I think it will be quite creamy tmrw. High of 50 expected here, and in the higher mtns, you may see 40s. Don't be afraid of the r@!n. If you wear goretex and have good goggles and a skigee, you can go out an be a hero on the snow the next coupla days.

Yeah, it really suxass that we don't have any natural snow here in the east. The west is getting hammered and we have nothin. Just gotta make the best of it and be thankful for snowmaking. The resorts have cranked out all the snow they could this past week. That's where you want to ski.

For sure, the groomers at Jay today were ice rinks. Ice rinks packed with holiday gapers. But that's to be expected given the weather of late and the fact that it's the holidays. Lines were long, but certainly nothing worth complaining about.

As for no powder, I wonder what the stuff in these still grabs from todays video is...

Anyhow, I apologize, but without the ability to PM you, I cannot ask if your Jay Peak beefs are simply a "clever" way of slowing the hype and keeping the mountain to yourself....

Sick and ashamed and happy (and, will admit, it took some work to find that snow),

redeyes, how about a little bit more trip report details, eh? also, i think there is a sticky note at the top of the forum indicating the appropriate syntax for the subject line of a no bull report.

you're stance on and posture towards jay in this and the last thread really casts doubts on your analysis of the conditions. would love to hear more details regarding your trip reports without the ensiteful commentary. there really isn't any powder in bounds any where in new england right now...
 
I was at Jay Dec 26-29. With the exception of Dec 27, I'd say redeye's assessment is correct. Coverage in the trees is sparse, especially where it's steep, and I suffered far too many core shots hunting for fresh.

There was plenty of fresh, light pow to be had on Dec 27 though (10-12" overnight) having made first tracks through Valhalla and Everglade/Staircase. Lots of snow that day in BBP, Timbuktu, and the Dog Patch. Pretty much everything was skiied out by the afternoon though, and the icy surface underneath the powder reared its ugly head.

See today's report?

"Upper mountain surface conditions are very icy. Lower mountains trails are frozen/wet granular, icy and wet."

Yup, skied Jay yesterday. First 2 runs were groomers, they were fairly awful. But thats normal for jay, dont go there for the groomers. The moguls were surprisingly good, scratchy backsides, with soft tops. Then I visited some of my usual places, and found untracked powder, and about 10" of it. Did a lot of rope ducking. Skied the tuckerman chutes twice, it was a mix of scratchy and drifted pow. The several nice powder turns that i got out of it made it well worth it.
Of course, now, i would think there's actually no powder at all.
It was good to be back for my annual pilgrimage. The east certainly doesn't have UT's snow, but it's got something else that I like. Something about the mix of conditions, and the challenge of trying to find the good snow. It's a lot of fun, i had a great day.

I also found out my tele skis do pretty well on ice.
 
to those who attempt to question my motives behind my reports with stunning pictures of soft snow, these are not the images that are going to disprove what i am saying. last week i skied in the trees some , it was very dangerous, yes there was soft snow blown in by viscous winds and the coverage is piss poor. it is a bad idea to ski in the woods when it is so thin. a little new snow on 6 inches of hard pack then earth. that's it, period. don't try to tell me or any others for that matter that things were okay, i just won't have it . so far conditions have sucked this season and it doesn't look like it is getting any better any time soon. lets all be honest here, you know as well as i how thin and below average everything is right now, if you have skied at jay for a long time, these conditions and the season has been one of the worst.

what are you trying to prove with your pictures?

honestly you must know that coverage is thin regardless of how things look in your images. whats up with that?

if you want to see pictures of what i am looking for at jay you just let me know and i will post them.

First off, I would hardly call those pictures stunning :wink:.

Second, I suppose danger is relative to the individual. I've been skiing in the woods since pretty much the second week of their opening and I don't feel I am putting myself at any greater risk than normal. Marginal conditions = slower speed and more awareness.

Third, I'm not trying to disprove or argue the fact that conditions are rough. I'm just not a fan of blanket statements, so when I heard "Jay Peak has no powder," I figured I'd throw up an image or two showing otherwise. Obviously these shots aren't indicative of the general conditions and I don't expect anyone would take them to be.

Fact is, this is the east and we are in the middle of the annual thaw/freeze cycle that kills conditions everywhere every year. Sure, this year is suffering a little more, but I'm hardened enough not to be disillusioned by the current state of affairs.

That's a very informative map. The snowy microclimates of Jay Peak and the lake-effect pockets downwind from Erie and Ontario really stand out.

To recap the original topic of this thread, yes Jay really does get a lot of snow. But from reports (and my one day of personal observation 3/18/03) it's obvious that its snow preservation characteristics are not good even by eastern standards. So the strategy seems clear. Go for it if the snow is fresh but avoid Jay if it hasn't snowed recently. This is precisely the strategy I use for Mt. Baldy, and for the same reasons.
 
AND YET, THE LIFT LINES ARE LONG, THE PRICES ARE HIGHER AND THE JOINTS ARE JAMMED PACKED ALL FOR WHAT SEEMINGLY ARE CONDITIONS THAT EXISTS AT LEAST 50% OF THE TIME FOR THE TIME PERIOD.... NOW SKIP AHEAD TO APRIL AND THE APRIL SCHOOL VACATION... 1/2 THE JOINTS ARE SHUT DOWN WITH MORE THAN 50% OF THE SKIABLE TERRAIN STILL SKIABLE, THE DAILY HIGHS ARE OFTEN IN THE 40'S AND 50'S, THE SUN IS SHINING, THE SNOW IS SOFT , THE SKI MASKS ARE PACKED AWAY , THE SNOW PACK IS HIGHER, THE PRICES ARE CHEAPER AND THE RACERS ARE ALL GONE :wink: ....ARE PEOPLE STUPID OR WHAT? UNBELIEVABLE :roll: :roll: :roll: :roll:
 
TONY , AS USUAL, NAILS IT... THE OBSERVATION ABOUT THE SNOW PRESERVATION CHARACTERISTICS PRETTY MUCH SUMS IT UP ABOUT JAY.... A VERY GOOD HILL INDEED, BUT THE HYPE IS A LITTLE OVER THE TOP WHEN FURTHER EXAMINATION TAKES PLACES, IMO
