Mt. Waterman and Snowcrest/Kratka Ridge

I hope Rick and Tico pull it off, but I have some major doubts that they "get it".

I gotta agree with Snowman on this. Even "Ma + Pa Baldy" updates their snow report at least once per day; any less is inexcusable.

The sad part is it's just not that complicated to update a web site with the latest news. So why is it so hard for Waterman? Just create a blog and update it daily, for crissake! Even 2 sentences would be enough. That takes what, <5 minutes?!?!??! ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

I just don't get it either. Because of the web, getting the word out is easy nowadays, but you still have to do it, and it looks like they're not even trying.

And we wait... :-" :-"

i cant even tell how much truth is in these snow reports, saying they got 3 feet on saturday is A LOT. they did say they would use it as a base and the snow would reeze the ground, but that would just be freezing dirt which seems like a core shot waiting to happen. i still think they should open this weekend but it is probly a better idea to hold off til 26th. is this heavier snow that is coming down right now gonna cause problems being on to off the light fluff?

They need some skier compaction. You get a bunch of volunteers to pack the snow. Have the trollers do it too. They do it at Silverton in Colorado this way. Give away some lift tickets for helping out. Its really not a big deal, but as others have said the owners don't get it. I'd go up there and help out as I am sure a lot of others would too. Oh well !

Second storm Wednesday was bigger than I expected, thus my last minute decision to hit Baldy yesterday. Waterman probably got 2 feet from that and close to 5 feet since Sunday.

So yes they have enough snow to open, if they have enough personnel.

I'm thinking of heading up tomorrow. It'll be my first time in these mountains and I don't know the roads so I'm looking for some help. I looked at the road conditions on the webpage and it says:

SR 2
[IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
IS CLOSED FROM ISLIP SADDLE TO 5 MI WEST OF BIG PINES (LOS ANGELES CO) -
DUE TO STORM DAMAGE - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

CHAINS OR SNOW TIRES ARE REQUIRED FROM 1 MI WEST OF ANGELES FOREST HWY TO
ISLIP SADDLE (LOS ANGELES CO)

CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES WITH SNOW
TIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM THE LOS ANGELES/SAN BERNARDINO CO LINE TO THE
JCT OF SR 138 (SAN BERNARDINO CO)

Can anyone confirm that the road is open? I assume that Mt Waterman is more than 5 miles west of Big pines but I'm not sure if the ski area is west of the county line (chain requirement). Also, what can I expect as far as the conditions of the road (steep, icy, snow covered, etc)? Snow tires required? Any chance my RWD car without snow tires would make it up there? I can probably borrow someones SUV if I have to but rather not if possible. I know that my car wouldn't make it up to Baldy.

Check the site early this week, but I am pretty sure they said they'd be open Thursday through Sunday next week.

I'm trying to post a bunch of pictures from today. What's the easiest way to get them into a post? I usually use Picassa.

You can upload them directly, which is easiest. While creating a post scroll down to the "Upload Attachment" tab. Use that to add a picture. Once the picture has been uploaded a "Place Inline" button will appear next to your attachment (in the same vicinity as that upload tab) -- anchor your cursor at the point in your post text that you want the image to appear and voila! It will appear there.

Greetings, friends. I actually read this entire thread from beginning to end, trying to mine info for my article. For any Kratka fans, I wrote an article for The Ski Channel about the shuttered single person chairlift at Kratka and its historical significance. Trying to raise awareness that there are only two single-person chairlifts operating in the U.S. The original design of Jim Curran's first chairlift at Sun Valley is teetering on extinction.

Cheers.

Interesting article. Needless to say I'm very skeptical that Kratka will be revived, much less with a rebuild of its single chair. We should all consider it a victory if the Metcalfs keep Mt. Waterman alive and stable. One question: If Waterman is a going concern but Kratka remains idle but under Waterman's ownership,
will the Forest Service still want to dismantle Kratka?

Just a reminder, news about Mt. Waterman's operation in the upcoming season and trip reports once it starts snowing should be in different threads.

This thread should now be confined to historical items like Zeke's article.

Reviving the longest running thread in FTO Liftlines history, Lynn Newcomb has passed away:

Yea my friend just told me that Mr Newcomb has passed. :-(

I didn't know him personally but met him many times and consider it an honor. The man was an utter legend and cut from a cloth they just don't make anymore.

I ,for one, appreciate his work in creating and saving Mt Waterman, every time i go there.

He will be remembered and missed.
