Mt. Waterman and Snowcrest/Kratka Ridge

Oh my. I'd heard the story and just shook my head but didn't know the connection to Newcomb's Ranch.

Bummer about Rundall.. but I can't say I'm surprised, really.

btw, we've eaten up there twice in the last few weeks.. I guess they got rid of Sysco, and got another supplier. I thought that might be a good move, but the food has gotten worse.. the ahi sandy used to be excellent, now it's half the size of before and tastes pretty bad. My wife is ticked because there is no longer any blueberry pie.. [-X Darren still makes the bets chocolate martini's I've ever had. =D>

Also, good news on the Hwy 2 front.. according to the engineers/Cal-trans.. the target date for re-opening the hwy is Oct 12th!...granted, it'll likley only be for a month before it closes for winter, but I'd take it!

Here's a link to some pics from one of my volunteers of the recent bridge work.. (scroll down for the latest pics)

Hey Snowave!

You are correct, no more Sysco. They drive down to Restaurant Depot in Pasadena to pick up food. They have been doing it for awhile now but didn't get a refrigerated truck until after I reported this practice to the Health Dept., lucky they didn't get someone sick.

The food is bad because Gary the chef left also because of Susie. David is the head cook now (I won't call him a chef) but he has no passion for what he does and can care less about the food he puts out. He just wants his paycheck, but he is Victor's nephew so the idiot doctor believes in him. Chuie or Isreal should be the head cook as both of them are 10 times better than David.

I'm hoping for the future of Newcomb's that the doctor is arrested and convicted and forced to sell Newcomb's. I know if this happens that a convicted felon can not have a liquor license so he probably wouldn't want Newcomb's anymore as his escape to go and get plowed.

Waterman needs a lift mechanic with NDT certification for summer maintenance and NDT work. If there is somebody out there that anyone knows about even if it is someone from another resort looking for some extra income please call me at (661) 400-8873 or email me at TomPMoriarty@aol.com.

Thanks

Sad news from Mt. Waterman today. GM Matt Schoefield passed away last night from complications of luekemia that he was battling. We all loved Matt and he was the main reason Waterman was able to reopen last winter. Matt put his heart and soul into getting the lifts up to code and recertified. He will be missed.

MW Update:

The summer maintenance on the lifts is being completed and we want to thank Louie Corrales from Bear Mountain for coming over and doing the NDT work, every thing should be ready for state inspection soon.

There was a very nice memorial service for Matt yesterday, but MW will move forward and will be working now also on the Warming Hut certification from the Health Dept. so it can operate this season.

It sounds like MW will operate this season on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.

There will still be no Rentals or shop probably again this season also. Very expensive to start this up from scratch and money is not available at this time for that.

That's good news, Tom, and it's nice to hear of your regional cooperation. Thanks for continuing to keep the masses informed!

The weekend/holiday schedule and not having a rental shop sound like good ideas to hold down expenses while getting up and running again.

Under the right conditions, Fridays could be interesting....

i think the key to avoiding last year's glitches is good communication, particularly online. Showing up at L.A. Ski Dazzle in December would be a good idea too. I think the potential clientele will be more than understanding of a minimalist model as long as that is communicated clearly. What is advertised on the website has to reflect what we see on the hill, with accurate updates on a timely basis.

Good stuff on the Waterman front. You don't need rentals or a shop or anything yet, just turn the lifts and the rest will follow.

I agree that it is absolutely crucial to keep the website up-to-date on current conditions and open/closed status. Doesn't have to be fancy, doesn't need graphics/flash/bells/whistles.

It just has to be current and updated AT LEAST daily.

Hopefully the weather cooperates and this becomes a good year for the hill.

I talked with Rick about the website and he agreed that the website needs to be kept up to date and it looks like I will take that over (and you all know how much I like to talk about MW).

He is also hoping to get the old 790-2002 number back. Today I have a Health Dept. Consultant coming up to hopefully get us on the right track to getting the warming hut certified and operational.

Hopefully snow is around the corner!

I hiked Baden-Powell yesterday and spent a good long time looking over at Waterman, hoping I'd get over there a bunch this winter.

Since I was the only one on the mountain yesterday, I also did a little snow dance up there.

Hopefully it works...

Have you guys thought about approaching a ski-snowboard rental shop and letting them use your rental shop space for the season at no cost? There is something to be said for having on-site rentals. I agree that it would be a costly start-up operation for you, but possibly you could find someone to operate in your space for the time being to simply make the service available to your customers.

I also agree with the rest of the comments. The web site messaging needs to be updated NOW.

If you need some assistance like creating a tool with a web interface for updating your snow report page feel free to contact me. I might be willing to trade services for lift tickets. You can contact me via http://www.ultimaterollercoaster.com

You could also create a blog at Blogger for example and point a subdomain to the blog and link your site to the blog. That's another way to have easy access to provide updates.

Not defending the lack of updates on the website, but some things still need to be done/approved before they can announce they are going to be able to operate again this year.
