Need advice on a plan for next season

I am planning on taking a full month off next winter to spend in Utah.

My quandary is:

1) Do I go in Jan-Feb to get the most-best powder?

or

2) Do I go for the month of April? Take in the last lift-served at Alta, then ski the Bird until I leave? I'd get warm spring conditions and all the variation of hard/soft/crunchy in between...probably a few powder days.

Advantage of #2 is that I can extend my ski season, and enjoy the skiing at home during the winter.

Main advantage of #1 is that I will ski the most powder in winter conditions and can visit Snowbasin and Powmow when it is good.

I can't decide which way to go. I'm sure you will have some opinions. Would love to hear.

Tony is definitely going to say #1.

If you go in April, you weren't going to extend your season that much.

Either choice sounds good to me.

PS. I went out West for one-week at one of the ski areas that gets the most snow in North America. I got some powder, but probably less than if I would have stayed East during that time. HOWEVER the most important is skiing, 1-month skiing, East or West, it doesn't matter. I Iove seeing new places and don't regret my choice of going to BC. I'm sure whatever time of the year you choose, you won't regret it.

sharon,
i'm thinking of taking 3-6 weeks off next winter and the wasatch is my destination of choice for sure. i'd definitely go with the jan/feb plan for better snow quality chances + the snow won't be as affected by the sun when it does come out after a storm that time of year although the sun can be a bugger out there on anything but northerly aspects even on the coldest days out there, adam did have to eat that apple didn't he!
i'd much rather leave the east in jan when we typically get the thaw and or temps that are vomit cold and not a whole lot of snow and come back and ski the east for the best spring conditions in the universe and pow that is less sun suseptible.
i'll see you out there maybe if you go with option 1, i'm gonna rent a unit at the studio 6 for 900 +- for a month. good deal with kitchen and laundry and super close to the mouth of big.

Which appeals to you more? Which is more important? You've experienced phenomenal powder this past season here...have you experienced great Wasatch spring conditions?

Potential down sides of each:
* #1: absolutely no guarantee of more powder days than what you experienced on your one-week trip
* #2: absolutely no guarantee of spring corn in April - it all depends on the by-then-annoying storms to reduce in frequency.

good points, one nice thing about going in mid-winter though is that even if it hasn't snowed in days or weeks, if yer willing to tour daily you can ski incredible pow from clear night recrystylization day after day and the snow is less likely to get sun !@#$#% ed as in march/april.

plus, in spring we'll have a base to ski out here but less likely in jan.

JUST MOVE...FULL TIME..

what, and lose my retirement???

10 more years here and I can retire with full bennies. I'm holding out for that. I'd be a fool to give that up. By that time the house will be paid off and it will be totally feasible to move out there in 2018...and by that time, it probably won't be snowing much here anyway

Skidog...what will you be doing when you are 55? Working full time? Putting your savings into a college fund? skiing on old gear?

I will be free to ski and it will be all about me  !! I just need to do my time here...and as you know, it ain't so bad. I got a pretty sweet life in the hills of CNY. Just not enough winter or vertical for my likes. But the spring, summer and autumn are pretty nice here anyway.

I wouldn't be skiing, mtn biking, hiking and swimming right from my door in SLC. I'm enjoying this now.

Who knows waht ill be doing when im 55, but I know between now and then, im going to be getting a LOT MORE QUALITY SKIING living here...doubt ill EVER be skiing on "old" gear...and yes likely I will be saving for a college fund, is there something wrong with that??? I think not...where will your legacy lie??

And...hmmm you wouldnt be skiing, mtn biking, or hiking right out your backdoor??? I beg to differ greatly there...I can pedal out my door and ride to the hills in a matter of a few minutes. You certainly have to pedal to the trail even if it is out your door....the accessibility of all these outdoor activities is MUCH closer than you seem to imagine. Not all the acreage thats a different story...you wont be in Salt Lake County if you want that kinda land...not likely anyway...

Have fun with that choice..ill be sure you know about all the powder days you miss before and AFTER your month.

You kind of missed her point that moving now and giving up retirement would be majorly dumb.

You do realize that those pics she posted are of her property? That stuff literally is immediately outside her front door.

no doubt about that...but while a powder day is cool, being able to retire when I'm 55 and paying off my debt in the next 10 years is way more important than the additional powder days. There is no tangible benefit to a powder day when it is over...just a memory...and memories can be made again tomorrow. I have no doubt that a month in Utah will be memorable...but I have to get back to my job so that I can afford more memories to come and freer times in the future.

and as for biking...do your dogs come with you when you ride out your door? can they run freely on the trail (off-leash) while you pedal? can you and your dogs swim in your backyard??? without getting in your car or filling up a pool?

and can you ice skate into the sunset without leaving your property?

Yes I know its right outside her door....i also know whats right outside mine....and it aint all that much different...different strokes for different folks.

and I understood her point EXACTLY.....sounded to me like she thought her retirement at 55 might be better than what I might be doing at 55....and I think NOT...so...maybe YOU need to go back and see what her point was...

I dont care what anyone says...the east coast is nice..and yeah I can get a LOT of land pretty cheaply in NH, or VT whatever....my problem was with jobs...if Sharon didn't have the gig she has...what options would there be in her locale....not much i'd suspect...you can hvae close to the best of everything right here in UT.....many natl parks, world class skiing, great mtn biking, and basically any outdoor activity you can imagine. I'd bet it would get old pretty quick riding the SAME trails EVERY DAY...just me though.

Nope they don't, but I know for one id get really bored riding the SAME EXACT trails for the next say 10 years (and you've been riding them now for how long?) sounds like it would get OLD FAST...I think I could easily have close to ten years of riding VERY close to here without hitting the same trail twice...(slight exaggeration but you get the point)

Hmmm my dogs dont really swim...as a matter of fact they dont at all and have been subjected to it pretty extensively back in NJ as my family had a pool...so...not a loss. Just arent into it.

dont ice skate so (least not in about 15 years)...not a loss either...

Now....76 days in...season aint over YET and i'd say a good 75% powder days.....I dont know if I could give that up for anything...

Now I dont disagree that you should stay there SIMPLY for the pension...but IMHO....it isnt any better than what I got right here, and from where im standing..I have it WAY better...but thats a lifestyle choice, and to each their own...

hope you pick the "right" month and get what you're looking for while you're here.

The boy's clearly been spending way too much time on TGR!

Naaaa dude...that was a direct callout...like her retirement at 55 was somehow going to be better than someone elses'.....

Who is she to assume what ill be doing at 55? Asking about college funds....??? COMPLETELY OUT OF LINE!!!!

Not to mention I was born in NYS...I think I know a little about the area....ITS MUCH BETTER HERE!!!

I didn't see it that way. And besides, your first shot in no way addressed her original question.

And who are you to assume that she can drop everything and move? Not all of us are so fortunate.

To each his/her own, and we all have differing priorities. So what if you grew up in NYS? Ever been to Sharon's place? Ever lived Sharon's life? If not, it doesn't really matter.

hmmm thats not a callout???

I see:
My name ONLY listed...
I see "skiing on old gear" which implies, TO ME, that I wont have the finances to buy new gear, and that Sharon will.
"putting into college fund" implies to me that this is a bad thing, othewise why mention it?

"someones" been pussyfooting around too long is what it is.

I seriously tried to head to the Whites for permanent residence, there just wasnt enough job security for me there...we DID try...dorve up many weekends for over a year searching with a realtor.

Though I think career wise and lifestlye wise I made the right decision for me and what my primary outdoor likes are.

Again...ive said this over and over...TO EACH THEIR OWN...

hey man, i don't blame ya one bit. i often think about leaving on my mtb out of my dimpledell, (i can't even remember how to spell it, sad), rental right up across wasatch blvd up onto the bonneville shoreline trail and beyond after a morning of pow skiing in the b.c. that ride started maybe 2 minutes from my door and one helluva climb. i can certainly do both here as well in mount washington valley or other spots but, not quite the same climate wise. yes, my job is certainly a factor in me staying here and at over 100 days and about 60% pow i'm not complaining either. my better half would move back out there in a heartbeat and my #1 touring partner craig wouldn't complain either. nice to know it's always an option. i have to say though for me personally it is nice to come out for an extended time, as my work allows, to to ski everyday and not have to work or think about work while i'm there. eat, sleep, ski powder... you got it good and we all know it.
