Need advice on a plan for next season

hey man, i don't blame ya one bit. i often think about leaving on my mtb out of my dimpledell, (i can't even remember how to spell it, sad), rental right up across wasatch blvd up onto the bonneville shoreline trail and beyond after a morning of pow skiing in the b.c. that ride started maybe 2 minutes from my door and one helluva climb. i can certainly do both here as well in mount washington valley or other spots but, not quite the same climate wise. yes, my job is certainly a factor in me staying here and at over 100 days and about 60% pow i'm not complaining either. my better half would move back out there in a heartbeat and my #1 touring partner craig wouldn't complain either. nice to know it's always an option. i have to say though for me personally it is nice to come out for an extended time, as my work allows, to to ski everyday and not have to work or think about work while i'm there. eat, sleep, ski powder... you got it good and we all know it.
rog

Funny...I didnt even want to mention the fact that I just moved out of a rental that offered the same option..literally out the gate and into Dimple Dell....right on the damned woodchips for the horses, so we can have it "pretty good" as far as accessibility goes to outdoor activities.

I honestly just took offense to being called out directly is all.

We each love where we live for different reasons. Its all good.

Wasn't Sharon just asking for vacation advice????

Actually she kinda asked a question thats been asked over and over again that NOONE can really answer. Unless of course someone has a direct line to mother nature...

Tony Crocker would likely have the best answer, but again I believe he'll say nothing is for sure with snowfall.

WHY IS SKIDOG ALWAYS YELLING?

If you have ever skied with him, you will know that he yells just as much in person as he does on this forum. I always wondered if his wife was deaf, cuz how could anyone put up with that :)

OK, we know that Skidog is happy with his move. That's great. But, not for everyone, and I didn't intend for this to become a Utah vs East debate once again.

Indeed, I am just trying to figure out how to maximize MY skiing and still enjoy the life I have here. I don't think I will ever want to live permanently in Utah, though I do hope to winter out there when I retire. In the meantime, I have 4-5 weeks off per year, so I can travel to ski pretty much when I want (with advance notice). It seems that driving once or twice a month to the Adks or VT is going to be excessively expensive, so I want to maximize my skiing (at least next season...I can only think about one season at a time). I manage to earn enough points on my credit cards to get a plane ticket once per year (especially with this house renovation project we are undertaking). I think it would be more economical to spend a full month out there than to do many trips in the car. I woud also hope to find a part time job in the evenings to help cover the costs of my skiing, or maybe work somewhere that offers a seasons pass...or maybe be a ski host. I'm looking into all the options. If any of you people out there have a viable idea in that department, please send it my way. And Skidog, no, I will not babysit your kid while you ski :)

If I go from MLK to Prez week, I believe I can maximize powder days as well as increase my chances for finding work that will provide skiing or at least funds to subsidize my skiing. I am leaning towards that time period. It is also the time period where the ski resorts in the east are very crowded and lift tix are $70. It is also a time where the skiers in Utah are the most excited about the snow.

But it sure does suck here in late April and early May when the trees are turning green and my allergies go berzerk and the snow is all gone here and the Utards are still skiing. This is why a late-season month in Utah is also desirable.

Still undecided. But I have time.

I see "skiing on old gear" which implies, TO ME, that I wont have the finances to buy new gear,
Nah. It just means that you'll find it very hard to justify new gear when you're only putting in 10 - 15 days a year.

Damn it sure will be fun watching your brain explode on a 36" powder day while you're.....in the parking lot directing traffic! Or stationed for 90 minutes in the Bird summit warming hut, answering tourist questions about where the best skiing is!

Nope they don't, but I know for one id get really bored riding the SAME EXACT trails for the next say 10 years (and you've been riding them now for how long?) sounds like it would get OLD FAST

If I get bored, I can drive 4 miles and be at a State forest with lots more trails. If that gets old, I can drive 10 miles to another state forest with even more trails. We have 6 places within a 30 minute drive where I ride/ski when I need a chance of pace and want the enjoyment of a group ride with my friends. I go less frequently now, mostly due to gas prices and time in the car. My friends come to my place to ride as well. All of those places also offer fantastic xc skiing. I know some of you could care less about that, but it is something I enjoy. My dogs are a big part of my life and they enjoy it as much as I do. Often we'll have 8 people and 8 dogs. To me, that is a great day out in the woods.

I don't get bored with my trails. They are very special to me and are pretty technical (the pix don't show that). Every day I climb an avg of 400'-500' vertical, which isn't big, but for my own backyard is a nice at-home aerobic work-out, and I do it daily. Sure beats going to the gym. And when it feels like it isn't enough, and I don't feel like getting in my car to find other places to ride, I make new trails..which is another kind of work-out and is quite rewarding.

So, the rolling hills of CNY are my home and I love it and the people here whom I have known for over 25 years. I've got roots here. I cannot make it snow more and I cannot increase the vertical or steepness and I cannot get my people to move with me. So I must venture out now n then on my own to other places. Just want to figure out when would be the best time to do it...to extend my season or to maximize powder days and overall conditions.

Hmmm you've actually never heard me yell...thats just my regular voice...sorry...nothing I can do, im cursed with being loud. A whisper from me is like a normal chat with another.

Just how it is unfortunately...

And she's not deaf...she just ignores REALLY WELL!!! :D

you are right. I was a Mtn Ambassador at Killington for 7 years. I've been there. It truly does suck doing off-mtn jobs on a powder day. My brain has exploded a few times in the past.

ok, a night job!

yeah NONE of that hear at all within 30 minutes.... NONE...

Oh yeah I enjoy my dogs too....if Sandy didnt have weird laws i'd have a few more! :D

If you're looking for powder, don't mind exploring, going backcountry and ski without paying $70 lift ticket without hearing a bunch of newcomers yell so much, you should fly into Northwest BC.

People are friendly and willing to share and show you the goods (a bit like Admin - except they all like Admin and they just love skiing so much and sharing it). Lucky Luke liked his 2 wks so much that he wouldn't mind moving there, before his retirement. I wouldn't, but it's a nice place to spend some time.

It's just an advice.

Another reason why I would not live there!

Well its just a different license...if you license more than 3 dogs you have to get a hobby license. If you have i think more than 5 or something its a kennel license.

I am SURE that CNY has laws like this as well in some fashion. I know you cant just own as many dogs as you want. Its really just a way to generate revenue.

Again this too is only a problem if you have problem dogs that someone complains about. Otherwise just have as many as you want.

OK, that's enough of the personal attacks. This ain't TGR, and it ain't gonna be. One more such outburst and I'll exercise my administrative authority to impose a time-out. You've been warned.
