Snowbird/White Pine backcountry, Utah - 3/8/09

My two cents, having left LCC the night before, I don't think a pit would have offered anything they didn't already know. We skiied the previous 2 days and everyone knew that the bottom layers were well-bonded after the preceding thaw had re-frozen. The most likely risk would be the fresh wind-loaded snow that hadn't bonded with the crust below.

Yeah, well...yesterday's snowfall put me back a bit in getting that video done. It'll take a good 6-8 hours of work to edit and produce it.

However, the slide itself is not captured on video (that would be a bit morbid, anyway). I stopped filming as soon as the slope broke free in order to keep an eye on Ben. Likewise, Bobby didn't get it from below, either.

Best I can tell from the footage Bobby shot, it appears that he took a still during Ben's run rather than video, then as each subsequent skier descended the Birthdays he was pushing the video button and stopping it when he thought he was starting it, and starting it when he thought he was stopping it. All I've got is lovely video of the ground in between skiers, and as soon as he zooms in on the next skier each video stops. #-o

bump this in hopes it will prompt admin to get off his but and produce a video HA.

Yeah. Tony Crocker's staying at the Auberge Guido. I was up until after midnight last night just keeping the news current, after skiing all weekend, fine dining in the evenings, etc. Note that I didn't even get posts up from the weekend yet!

Gotta get back to a normal schedule...

Checking in after a long absence (like, I'm drowning in Internet/Info overload nowadays) ..........

OH MY GAAAAWWWWWD!  Please be careful, Marc! It's those PILLOWS! Watch out for them there PILLOWS! Wind loaded pillows of snow. They build up bigger and faster than we'd intuitively think. We had a little event on the Rockpile in early April where a piddling 2cm of new had PILLOWED into 50cm of wind slab under The Lip

Hope all is well and we should all start doing beacon practice now !

Yeah, it was a cheap lesson, for sure!

BTW, "Mahk"...your old registration is still around. I can reset the password for you if you like. In any event you've been gone for far too long -- good to see you here again, your contributions are highly valued.

wow!

missed this thread. LOW DANGER DON'T MEAN NO DANGER. wind swirling snow landing on crust in just enough of a protected slightly lee/cross area is very suspect. stay away from the shade. seems all were playing it pretty conservative with thoughtfulness. skied that same line in corn late april. nice little spot.
