Tony, I think you may have checked a day or two too early. Many Colo resorts opened hundreds or even 1000 more acres on Saturday (Vail opened China Bowl). Timing of the storms meant lots of work to get more terrain actually opened up.
I'm actually glad Colorado is doing so well this year. Keep it up, it will help keep our crowds down over here!

Copper went from 22% to 33% and Vail went from 51% to 69% (presumably China Bowl). Other numbers are within a percent or two of Friday's. Based on weather forecasts I don't see much in the way of further expansion over the next week.

I wish the Utards would comment on the validity of Alta's reported 26 of 116 trails on the consolidator websites. That seems low based upon the TR's.

As you know, trail count is a relatively useless statistic at a place like that. Honestly I couldn't begin to tell you if it was accurate or not.

So how are things looking for my little trip on Wednesday...hopefully better than here..although here wasn't too bad for this time of year.

Warm and dry. I'm at the mountain now. What's open is skiing pretty darned well, but it's expected to remain warm and dry for the foreseeable future.

Until today, apparently.

As Admin says, dry and abnormally warm for the next week. There's a glimmer of something moderate next weekend, but no one is holding their breath at the moment.

Amazing..big winter storm watch for the Catskills into Wednesday..6 to 10 inches predicted...I'll take a dry Utah any day over it though..at least I'll come back to something...

Surprising to see Alta at the bottom of this list and not the top...

Of course we're still in the thick of the storm and there were gusts over 90mph last night. The current Snowbird report kinda says it all:

as of 10:30 am

Due to high winds Chickadee will be the only lift opening for the day.

Meanwhile next door, Alta "expects" lifts to open by 11am.

We've had 1-2 feet of very heavy, dense snow with a water equivalent between 2 and 4 inches. If that's not enough, the wind has been nuking from the west yesterday afternoon and overnight blowing strong enough to tip over a tractor, as we say in my native state of Montana--60 mph and gusting to near or just over 100. Several ski resorts report lots of trees blown over. Yesterday afternoon, the rain snow line rose to nearly 8,000', which made very upside-down, slabby snow.

We will continue to have another 6 inches or so of new snow today with continued high wind from the northwest, 50, gusting to 80 on the exposed peaks.

Jim Steenburgh said water content at Alta/Collins during this storm got as high as 20%. Snow totals rate to remain higher in Colorado, but the higher density in Utah should build a bigger base. This is what is supposed to happen typically in the Sierra, but the brunt of this storm went through Oregon before dipping back to the SE.

Bachelor reports widespread lift icing from this storm. It may be a few days before Schubwa can give us an eyewitness report of the effects.

Storm total now 27" and counting at Alta, but Marc_C said it all. Mbaydala described a war zone there this morning with all of the bombing, and I can personally vouch for the 20% water content down low but better up high. Great base building snow. I'll have a report from the weekend up tonight.

Just heard the TV weatherman say that with the amount of water in this snowfall, if we had received our typical snow density instead of the Sierra Cement that we got, it would have been on the order of a 60"-70" storm.

Surprising differences between Loveland and Abasin the past two days... Still surprising to see Alta down the list (though obvious 48hr error as that should be 25")

Also surprising differences all across Colorado from nothing new all the way up to the 19" at Loveland over the past 24 hrs. Lots of terrain opening recently and I suspect even more to come very soon. Examples: Pali opened yesterday at the Basin with Zuma Bowl to open sometime in the next few days (per Al's blog); Copper Bowl lifts now running with a handful of runs so far; Eldora even opened some blue to single black terrain on natural snow - though none of the really good stuff is open yet; etc...

Kirkwood reported on FB that they received 2-4" of 24% SWE 'very wet snow" on 12/21. They went to 100% operation on 12/23.

Tony Crocker's advice is part of Sunset Magazine's 2015 Winter Travel Guide in the January issue. Tony's part of the guide is on page 55 and tabbed "Know Your Snow" and titled "Where to Go, And When". I don't think I can provide a link to it (may be available later), but the article includes a link to bestsnow.net - Congratulations.

This was another exercise in dealing with print media, better than some but still frustrating. I got one preview of a first cut that was pretty bad. I sent Sunset a rewrite with the exact format and word count. The end product was an improvement over that first cut, but fell short of what it could have been with one more review and just a few wording changes.

At least Sunset magazine did not do to your part of their story what they did to The Snowpine Lodge. At the bottom where it says "SLEEP ON THIS", they included something about the ski area where the lodging is located. For Snowpine they wrote "After a controversial 2014 decision to ban snowboarders, Alta is one of the three ski-only resorts in the country." I think they left out the "continue to" or "not lift the" before ban.
