Western Weather 2017-18 and Later

My weather station had coldest temp in years on Mon 2/10 at 28F. In PM it warmed up to 66. When I did a big uphill on my 7th mountain bike ride in the last couple of weeks, I had to take off long sleeve T-shirt and just wear thin short sleeve.

This week's storm delivered better than last week's which was mostly a bust. Friend who lives at 6K a couple of miles N of Truckee said it was 36 all day yesterday and the 11" that fell on his 800' driveway was too heavy for snowblower on his small tractor so he had to use his walk-behind Honda snowblower. So. Tahoe neighbor said it was all rain in our neighborhood just above Lake level yesterday during day.

Yep - snow on some Bay Area 'high peaks'. (4k+)

I did have wet snowfall at sea level in the mid-2000s in the East Bay on my way to Tahoe. And once or twice on Twin Peaks/Mt. Sutro (1k)

The Verdugo peaks above my house (2,500-3,000) have had snow 3x in the 40 years I have lived there. The highest neighborhoods ~2,000 feet in the Crescents Valley behind the Verdugos used to get snow once every 7 years or so before the 1980’s. It is possible my first memory is seeing snow out our front window in La Canada in 1955 or 1956.

Surprised to see no posts about recent avalanches in the western US.

First up was at Mammoth on Friday morning when two patrollers were buried in the Avi Chutes off Chair 22/Lincoln peak area. One OK-ish, one severely injured. Read somewhere that the severely injured is in ICU in Reno and is a female patroller. Mammoth news article

Far less impactful as to injury, one of the 7 Sisters chutes near Loveland Ski area slid while traffic was on the road on Friday night. Knocked one pickup truck off the road and upside down and caused a lot of headaches for other travelers stuck on the Loveland Pass road. Pickup Truck Pics article, Stranded drivers article.
