American Election 2024

Glad you guys are entertained. I'm sincere in my hope that our next president doesn't impact you negatively.

Biden didn't resign for health reasons. He resigned because he was convinced he couldn't win. He remained confident he could do the job. (He's wrong about that, as inspiring confidence is a large part of the job.)

Trump drove turnout last time, on both sides. He's running again, I expect a high turnout.

@Harvey
My comment was flippant I admit.
I understand that strong and stable US leadership is vitally important to the globe.
And it’s not lost on me that Australia relies heavily on the US for security. Hopefully future administrations remember that we have, rightly or wrongly, dutifully supported the USA into every conflict since the Korean War.
Sadly I get the impression that loyalty isn’t one of Mr Trump’s strong suits.

Talking of decline of Biden, Trump has been more unhinged now that he was 4 years ago.
Trump has been unhinged since day 1 IMHO. But this year he's doing some of the same old age stuff as Biden: transposing names, wandering off tangent in his speeches (sharks, anyone?).

I don't have time to write up all of my biggest concern of Trump being elected again, but it's something skiers should be especially aware of: climate change caused by burning fossil fuels which Trump seems to be especially ignorant about and was something JD Vance used to believe and invest in, but now denies. “It’s one thing for an ignorant person to learn the facts, but the opposite is kind of perverse,” the former investor said. “How do you unlearn something?”

The day after the debate Trump said "... where the ocean will rise – maybe, it may go down, also – but it may rise one eighth of an inch in the next 497 years, they say. One eighth." and “Which gives you a little bit more waterfront property if you’re lucky enough though.” Sea level is already rising more than 1/8" per year and it will give you less waterfront property, not more. An interesting fictional book on what could happen in the not very distant future that I recently listened to is The Light Pirate.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear had some great lines about Vance and Trump:

“I mean, he first says that Donald Trump is like Hitler, and now he’s acting like he’s Lincoln,” Beshear told “The Source” anchor Kaitlan Collins, recalling Vance’s conversion from Trump-hater to toady in recent years.

Then came the line that mocked both GOP nominee Trump and his running mate with one line: “The problem with JD Vance is he has no conviction, but I guess his running mate has 34.

From https://www.sfgate.com/politics/art...asts-trump-in-exchange-with-musk-19589468.php yesterday:
A Bay Area tech mogul (who does not necessarily support Harris and has long-running legal problems from cutting off access to a beach where my family used to go fishing) had some choice words about former President Donald Trump in an exchange with Tesla CEO Elon Musk on X on Sunday
“Hard for me to support someone with no values, lies, cheats, rapes, demeans women, hates immigrants like me,” Khosla replied. “He may cut my taxes or reduce some regulation but that is no reason to accept depravity in his personal values. Do you want President who will set back climate by a decade in his first year? Do you want his example for your kids as values?”

Elon's political shift is 99% personal. See clips at 4:05, 7:25 and 10:00.
The first two clips are from a 2 hour interview by Jordan Peterson yesterday.

So his reaction (moving X and SpaceX HQ out of California) to Newsom signing the bill protecting teachers who don't notify parents about gender dysphoric kids was no surprise.

I don’t want to use the word unprecedented….
Mainstream media here in Oz are doing regular reports on the upcoming election. Certainly since the 80s that has never happened 4 months out from an election. And most certainly a possible VP has never been a household name 4 months out from an election. The Vance fellow seems to be quite the personality.
Is this election a bigger deal in the US than previous elections?

Thanks but…

Do a search for John Oliver's HBO series "Last Week Tonight" -- Season 11/Episode 15, titled "Trump’s Second Term." It answers your question quite well in an entertaining way.

Thanks James. I did search but I only got old videos about random subjects. Nothing on Trump or elections.
Edit. Was it a recent vid? Date?

Trump does create drama.

Some of his non-sequitors on sharks, wind turbines, electricity, EVs, etc are quite humorous - in more of a crazy way.

He gets ratings.

Vance makes it a problem framing the election as Trump the good strongman versus some weak caricature opponent, cuz Vance brings so many weak caricatures to the forefront: hillbillies that still haven't gotten over Obama, and misogynists that make even Archie Bunker seem too far left.

It benefits all Americans if everyone reaches their full potential. But start squawking if that includes the brown people and the women?

Trump said Vance kissed his ass, no kidding. The path to career advancement is stuff like that? No, Americans tend to downvote brown-nosers.

Vance is Creepy.

Yes, cuz Trump hates everything. His former cabinet, all his party's former presidents and nominees, his former VP, the list seems endless.

He got caught on live TV trying to overturn an election. As nutty as this ticket is, it seems even nuttier for me the citizen to vote FOR the candidate who says my vote shouldn't count if cast otherwise.

June 17. A shame if the clip is blocked for you: informative and as always, it's entertaining to have a Brit explain America to Americans.

John Oliver is always entertaining and often hits the nail on the head. You saw his show about when Australia banned guns after the Port Arthur massacre?
Sorry for off topic.

Trump urges Christians to vote, says they won't have to again if he wins 2024 election

“In four more years, you know what? It’ll be fixed. It’ll be fine. You won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians,” Trump added during his 70-minute long speech. “We'll have it fixed so good. You're not going to have to vote.”

Story linked above also includes that "Recent polls published since President Joe Biden exited the 2024 race show Trump’s lead in the race slipping. He is now neck-and-neck with likely Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris."

Edit to include link to some of CNN's coverage of Trump's speech to Turning Point Action Believers’ Summit. Sorry if other countries can't see it.

Blocked in Canada also.
Both Australia and Canada have passed laws requiring tech companies to compensate news media for use of their material. In response Meta in particular but sometimes Google also block news sites in those countries. Since the John Oliver was You Tube (owned by Google) I'm guessing that's the issue.

Out former admin has been bitching that he can't post news links on Facebook when he is in Canada.

https://www.newsweek.com/chris-sunu...ying-people-wont-have-vote-four-years-1931199 mentions Trump's previous controversial "dictator" comment while speaking with Fox News' Sean Hannity in December, telling the host that he won't be a dictator in his second term "except on day one."

He later repeated the statement during a keynote speech at the New York Young Republican Club's annual gala that same and said, "I said I want to be a dictator for one day. You know why I wanted to be a dictator? Because I want a wall, and I want to drill, drill, drill."
Trump's drilling comment was a reference to his vow to expand oil drilling in the U.S. He later said that the comments were in a "joking manner."
On Sunday, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu and Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas were confronted about Trump's Friday comments. Both downplayed the former president's remarks.

So Canada and Australia are unlike the US in that their citizenry are not getting most of their news from Facebook?

It was interesting that Facebook recently tweaked its algorithm to de-emphasize political news. Hurting all sites, but right wing sites even worse.

I could have added this to my edit of my post last evening, but think the first part is important enough to stand alone.

From https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/poli...-edited-version-of-kamala-harris-campaign-ad/
"Elon Musk, a master of the memes, is planting his flag in deepfake territory—and risking backlash at a fraught political moment.

Musk, Tesla’s billionaire chief executive, on Friday shared on X an edited version of a campaign video for Vice President Kamala Harris purporting to be a parody. By doing so, he potentially breached his own social-media platform’s policy against sharing synthetic and manipulated media."

Since one of our administrators posted clips from questionable sources about Musk's being "tricked" into allowing his child to undergo transgender-related medical treatment when she was 16, I thought I should share her response to being "killed by the woke mind virus."
