I've purposely avoided any written content about him; however, I broke down and read this recent NYT piece, which provides a relatively balanced overview of his career, including that he was a darling of the left until a few years ago.
 
Did the article say that?

In the Big Picture, left/right looks silly cuz normal people have principles. Things like demagogery, aggression, and insurrection are counterproductive. The silly left/right scorekeepers wanna just call it...slightly counterproductive I guess. Lies might become...just slightly untrue.
 
I don’t know what to think. This isn’t even funny anymore.

Trump gives Elon the reins to the nation.
Trump uses the office of the presidency to sell Elon’s cars.
Seriously. This is truly concerning for the whole world.
