Beer thread?

The beers and the views look lovely. I don’t get the opportunity to enjoy a sunset over the water often.
Will have to get to Mexico one day.

Tripadvisor has Tuna Azul as no. 3 of 1,772 restaurants in Puerto Vallarta.

I couldn't find description of different Michelada's at https://restaurantguru.com/Tuna-Azul-Puerto-Vallarta/menu which has a lot of their menu. We had the Montaditos Mango Habanero on our first visit along with Cucaracha Shrimp (good but too much work and mess). We had the Montaditos Poke Tuna on 2nd visit.

I prefer my Michelada with spicy tomato juice vs. Clamato. The one my wife had was mostly lime juice plus black chile and Worcester sauces (and of course beer).

Yes, an east coaster. You just have to get up early for sunrises! Sunsets are rather routine for me, though in tropical locales since joining Solar Eclipse Mailing List in 1999 I'm on the lookout for green flashes. Once in Florida I observed a Gulf sunset and Atlantic sunrise the next morning because I went to see a Falcon 9 rocket launch at 1:30AM.

In a previous life as an offshore boatie I have had my fair share of sunrises over the water. It’s extra special if the dawn bite is on and you’re connected to something decent while taking in the view.

Of course it’s possible to see the sun set over the water locally in some of the many bays. Today was a public holiday for Australia Day so we went for a walk at Woody Point this evening. It’s very local to my house.

I've never seen this one before. $10.99/6 at Grocery Outlet. "East Coast Haze Meets West Cost Flavor. Radical" "Limited Hazy Series" 7% and very nice. I like Sierra Nevada's (California’s largest craft brewer) Hazy Little Thing more than their flagship Pale Ale, a little more bitter than I prefer.

I picked up the Hazy Little Thing when I was recently in Idaho. We can only get the pale ale here in Oz. Oh and I also got the Torpedo one too. Both great beers at a bargain price.

A strong south easterly breeze has made the weather much more pleasant the last couple of days. Nice weather to sit outside with a beer of a late arvo. This is a truly excellent beer from a Sydney brewer. A bit too boozy for a lightweight like me at 7.1% though.
I don’t know if my mate Rod who drinks that mass produced ‘cold and wet’ mid strength tasteless beer by the bucketload, would consent to being in the pic. Oh well.

I’m sure I would have shared this before now. 80 IBU. Some would say too hoppy but I like it as a one off. From South Australia where our best red wine comes from.

The glass is a treasured one from my collection.

Are not most IPAs in that >5% range - more like 7%?

I’m sure I would have shared this before now. 80 IBU.

I was a bit unaware of IBU's measurement of bitterness. It's good to know because there are now overwhelmingly bitter IPAs to help distinguish breweries—too much competition.

Hazy and the New England IPA thing.

In the late 1990s/early 2000s, it was termed 'Unfiltered.' However, I think the squeamish did not like the idea of 'dead yeast,' so everything is now remarketed as "Hazy."

One of the original New England breweries doing the Unfiltered/Hazy thing before it was cool - UFO Beer Company, Boston, MA. Their Unfiltered White Beer could be found throughout the city on tap.

And my favorite reincarnation of Malt Liquor - White Claw Hard Seltzer and others. I wish Gen Z and Millenial women would just drink Zima.

White Claw Hard Seltzer is an alcoholic seltzer water beverage manufactured by Mark Anthony Group. The beverage was introduced in 2016 and is sold in 12 various flavors. The beverage is made from a blend of seltzer water, a gluten-free malted alcohol base, and fruit flavor.

Our son took us to dinner at Jtown Pizza, one of the businesses in San Jose's Japantown owned by same people as leading Karaoke bar nearby where he works. He gets a good discount on food, especially when before or after working, and beverages. He worked 945-145 last night and also usually works Sat. night. It was very quiet in San Jose's Japantown last night due to rain falling most of the day. San Jose has a long history with people from Japan living in area just N of downtown. While they were interred during World War II, they did not suffer the same fate as Chinese where the biggest Chinatown S of San Francisco was burned in 1887.

The beers were the Coronado Hazy on the left that I didn't realize would come in a can and the much better on tap Fieldwork Brewing Hazy Train "our crowned Prince of Dankness; is pale in color with a blizzard of haze, there is no apology for its appearance. Fresh juice notes jump out of the glass and leap onto your palate like they're taking stage at Wembley, followed by sticky dank hop and bright citrus aromas. Flavor is weighed down heavily with fresh cut star fruit, honeydew melon, grapefruit, and a zip lock freezer bag of the highest grade weed your roadies could score. The slightly velvety mouthfeel makes all those flavors merge and play together like a supergroup without it ever getting too bitter and going off the rails. Feel free to crush your pint of Hazy Train with reckless abandon and revel in its juicy nature and hop character that's been cranked up to 11; just do yourself a favor and don't pee on the Alamo" maybe partially because it was fresher. It was good enough that my wife and I split a 2nd one. Our son did a Dry January as he has for a years and has stopped drinking during the week.

I've only been to Fieldwork location in Monterey, an outdoor beer garden. They are soon opening their 9th and 10th locations in Northern CA. They make or have made many, many beers.

I like the Jtown glasses.
I didn’t know you had a lad. Does he ski?

My son first skied when he was 3 and is now 33. He may have only gotten one day last year as girlfriend at the time did not ski. He is planning on going this year, maybe to Sugar Bowl, as part of bachelor party for college roommate where he is going to be the best man. He is stuck mostly being a weekend warrior as he moved back to Silicon Valley for the big bucks, but got laid off after a year and it took a year to find something new that was full-time. Many of the hirings lately in our area are as contractor, not as employee, so while he gets some health care coverage, days off are without pay. I've posted other versions of this before but still think it may be the best ski photo I've taken. It's my son on December 2, 2018 when Eagle Bowl at Kirkwood opened for the season after 45" of snow over 5 days.

We went downtown last evening to take care of transit cards that needed attention after unplanned train trip home from SFO last month. Our son got sick and couldn't pick us up so we used mass transit to get to his place where our vehicle and dog were. On Valentine's Day we planned to watch granddaughter's band play at event at City Hall, but they cancelled due to illness (or rain?) so we had a Ghostwood Beer Company Skyline Haze at a tap house nearby (no photos). It was too early to go to seafood place that we'd planned so we went home, and I barbequed prime filets I'd bought at Costco earlier in week. I pulled out one of our oldest Cabernets to go with the steaks. Not all the great ones come from Napa Valley.

Friend had an extra ticket for Carvin Jones, the Blues King of Strings, at a New Orleans-themed restaurant between downtown and where the Sharks play. Great show, probably less than 80 people in attendance. Carvin Jones shook our hands on his way in and sat down with us to eat his meal during the first intermission.

I saw they were hosting a Russian River beer event that got you a glass of Pliny the Younger without driving to Santa Rosa (we were there for something else last year) and waiting in an hour plus line to get into one their two locations. The bartender also gave me a preview taste of Pliny the Younger. My son was interested in going and he is getting our dog to/from his friends' house who is watching them while we go on a long skip trip, so I bought tickets for both of us.

The pours were generous, more like 12-14 ounces so we were both glad we had not driven to event. I introduced myself to the owner who is the youngest brother of guy who was in my class for 8 years of grammar school. There was an organ player singing hits from the 50s-90s in a Jazz-style. We split an order of popcorn shrimp there before leaving after our 5th beer to split an order of spicy chicken strips at a place my son likes in the shadow of the San Jose's first skyscraper. Bistro didn't provide an order or any direction so we had the Hazy, followed by Happy Hops, Younger, Elder and Porter (see below). All very good. And I didn't need to drink anything besides a half gallon of water with dinner.

I remember your post about Pliny the Younger.
I love an imperial porter but generally only drink it while on holiday in cooler climes.

I calculated how many 4% Coors Light (my son's usual) it would have taken to match the alcohol in our 5 beers assuming 12 oz. pours = 11
0760AlesmithPorter.JPG

Since I'm heading to "cooler climes" in ~32 hours and only had some Stellas, I picked up 6-pack of Alesmith Porter at Grocery Outlet today. $6.99 + tax and CRV/6. From San Diego, 7.5% and goes well with dark chocolate. Hope to be drinking some in hot tub near HDN on Sat.

Sorry, most of the more mainstream craft beer six-packs were $10.99 and some were a little more. And on less the expensive beers I always look for the ‘canned on’ or other date as I don’t want to buy too old beer. This Porter was 5 months old. Some of their IPAs were 9 or more.

My wife is in El Salvador for a week. I know Australia and England are very strict on driving while impaired and UT has a 0.05 limit. In El Salvador the limit was lowered to 0.00 before Christmas so they were shopping for NA beer and wine for party for her sister’s 60th. I’d rather drink water. Uber has been doing well.

I don’t know what it is in other countries but the kids on provisional licences here in Oz have to be 0.00% blood alcohol concentration. Something like that in the US?
