Beer thread?

Every state has their own rules. For California, I found at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/alcohol-and-drugs/

"It is illegal for you to drive if you have a BAC of:
  • 0.08% or higher if you are over 21 years old.
  • 0.01% or higher if you are under 21 years old.
  • 0.01% or higher at any age if you are on DUI probation.
  • 0.04% or higher if you drive a vehicle that requires a commercial driver’s license.
  • 0.04% or higher if you are driving a passenger for hire."
The problem with enforcing 0.00 is that you can show some alcohol from mouthwash or orange juice or bananas and many other foods.

I realized that and thought I erased my post. :icon-redface: Drinking age was traditionally determined by the states. When I was growing up most states were 21 but there were notable exceptions (New York and Louisiana were the ones I remember) that were 18. When I was 19, most states lowered the age to 18. This was the Vietnam era and the contrast of being draftable at 18 vs. the drinking age became an issue. Then in the 1990's there was a crackdown on drunk driving and the Feds threatened to withhold highway funds if states didn't raise the age to 21.

My oldest brother had the fun distinction of being legal to drink, then not legal a couple of times as NY state was dumb enough to stair-step the switch over several years. I was well behind that implementation, but the local cops didn't care all that much about older teens getting drinks in those days even after the 21 age passed.

I tried out a relatively new microbrew pub in Telluride that I was really impressed with: beer, food, atmosphere and renovation.

Stronghouse - Telluride Brew Pub
LINK
Located in downtown Telluride, the on-site brewery and restaurant occupy a historic 1892 stone building. Craft beer on tap.

One interesting note: It was Awarded “Best Brew Pub in America” by USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards 2023-2024
(I have NO idea how readers from a very MainStream Newspaper would vote in mass for a very remote ski town brew pub - must have been some online thing).

It’s relatively small, and they try to discourage crowding at the bar by seating people. Menu is reminiscent of a German Beer Hall.

One thing - I liked the IPAs. Owner is a traditionalist/chemist and refuses to do trends like Hazy or overly Hoppy.

I never drank a drop of alcohol until age 21. On my birthday I got puking drunk on Jim Beam while stumbling around college campus. Been a moderate drinker ever since. Mostly beer, rarely liquor.

Swish fit out!

Great beer from Paso Robles. Enough blood orange to see it and taste it unlike some other beers I've had that seem like they barely taste of stale fruit. Photo taken at rest stop halfway across NV last Wednesday. Beer was $3.29 at Gold Ranch gas station that is barely into NV.

My parents, both addicted smokers when I was a kid, said they would pay me $1,000 if I did not smoke before age 21. In the early 1960's it did not occur to them whether that would include weed. But just to be sure I abstained until then. My Charter Club friends at Princeton made sure I got extremely stoned on my 21st birthday. I thought this was a clever plan by my parents so with my sons I offered two $1,000 payments, one for tobacco and one for weed. Adam collected the $1,000 for tobacco. Neither could resist weed.

Being the age I am and having at least two brain cells I never dreamed of smoking tobacco.
Weed didn’t agree with me really. Out of the dozen times I tried it I had a good experience twice. The other times I felt a little anxious if anything.
