Report from the Mountain is a successful Load Test and MW will operate this year. Let it Snow!

happy for the new owner, keeping mt waterman open is a great thing he is doing.

sorry..just a little, for the few of us who have had the place to ourselves for the past few seasons. 04 and 05 were awesome.

Hoping for a return to Waterman this winter (at least legally). Am I to believe the permitting process is underway and we could see the mountain open after the next good dumping?

It looks like the mountain may have received a little base last Saturday-Sunday. Any snow this time of year should stay a while.

Been skiing the mountain since '82, looking forward to more days on the hill. Is there a website or snow phone (the traditional # is discon)?

Any info would be great! Thanks in advance.

MW will open after the first significant snowfall. All 3 lifts are good to go and permitted. The usual challenges will still exist to find employees come opening day. The Warming Hut will be operational but I don't see Rentals happening at this time. There is somewhat of a base on the hill and they have a couple of new Pisten Bully groomers (well new to MW, you probably seen them running around the hill at Mammoth in previous years) ready to go.

So bring on the Snow!

I know its kinda early in the game, but why no advertising? no web page (except the myspace page), no brochures, no publicity that I've seen anywhere.. I live up here and if it weren't for my ties to the USFS and Newcomb's, I'd have no idea that anything was happening.. I do my part in tellign everyone that comes up to the forest about Waterman, but you guys really should try and get the word out... work with SportsChalet in La Canada?.. put a cheap ongoing ad in the local papers, call the newschannels when you plan to open.. try to get one or more of the papers to do a piece on the mountain reopening..

just trying to help so we can keep the ball rolling...!

I know Matt is working on those things now. He is working on something with KROQ he said. A lot of time and money was spent on getting the lifts up to code to get to this point of having permits.
Marketing programs can't be set up till you know you can operate and now that is the next step.

Snowave, I would like to meet you. Were you at the Mountain Christmas
Party last night at Newcomb's? I am at Newcomb's everyday right now as we are putting in a new POS system, so stop on by and say hi.

Tom

With regard to the advertising, someone from Waterman should have been at SkiDazzle Nov. 29 - Dec. 2.

I think the advertising situation is not easy. The youth market here is so snowboard/terrain park centric that hitting youth-oriented media like KROQ might not be the best way to go. Getting a decent web site running and the word out to the ski shops would be a good start.

Tom, I have to think we've met sometime in the past.. i just can't put a finger on it. I couldn't make the party at Newcomb's, as this week has been a bad one for me.

I recently got a new job over at Big Pines, so I'm not around this side of the forest as much any more.. although I do live near Monte Cristo. However, I'd still be interested in helping out with some advertising. I'll send you a PM or stop by Newcomb's sometime soon.

Waterman has revamped their buildings. They had considerable snow in many places. I could have trucked around in XC skis had I brought them. I was there to move things around the rooms to the patrol room, etc. Quite a nice day. I think it is a more advanced less traffic area! Nice to the advanced skier in search of a little peace and quiet! Great day! Carol

The two upper chairs at Waterman serve mellow terrain and are probably not far off from being skiable after last weekend's snow. The lower chair has great 30 degree tree and mogul skiing and needs at least a 4 foot natural base, like Baldy.

The face runs can be reasonably done with a 2ft base.. otherwise, it'd never be ridden.. this is socal Tony, come on.

That's not really the way it works in feast-or-famine SoCal. With the good exposure the base at Waterman is continuously 6+ feet for 2+ months in good years like 1998, 2001 and 2005.

Your both right on this one. Several years ago we got out the jackhammer and took out a lot of the big rocks on the face. With 2 feet you can ski it, but have your "Rock Skis" and your best bet is 2-1/2. To be fun and enjoyable I would say 3-4 feet is optimal and when there is 5 feet it's time to head to Avi!

Oh yeah, Cloudburst, Avi, Winston, Cant wait... Rocks or not I'm ready. I mean if you've skied Waterman much at all you've no doubt gone through some skis there. Let it snow..

Yes, it is true. I am not like you in that I will ski anyting early season. I enjoy it, being in the woods, warming up. It was such a stress relief to ride up the mountain with patrol, stop at the Newcombs Ranch, play with the new Malamut puppy the Waterman folks have, talk to a fellow female patroler. What a nice work party in the new limited snow. Beats driving the pavement for the weekend! The sun was out, the air was clean, you know. I can relax a bit and enjoy the atmosphere and calm. :) The mountains make everything alright sometimes!

Ha Ha! Just to clarify, Maya is a Siberian Husky not a Malamute and she is a bundle of energy and so cute.
OK, OK! Whoops. Here is my excuse! They look so similar: (quote)
The Alaskan Malamute is a large northern dog breed originally bred for use as an Alaskan sleddog and is often mistaken for a Siberian Husky. ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaskan_Malamute
Check Check out the picture, looks like Maya! They should all have the same name, beautiful dog!
:).

Is it snowing now Tom?
