Mt. Waterman and Snowcrest/Kratka Ridge

Well, it looks like work is progressing nicely at Mt. Waterman. They have had to delay load testing, but have new day in October and if all goes well just in time for the season (hopefully if it snows!).

I heard Oct 23rd.

Tom.. why has it taken a year to get the load test done? This seems it was the issue last fall? Does the state not do inspections all year or is there some technical stuff I'm missing out on here? I also remember them having to reschedule the load tests several times last year..

Seems they would have wanted to get this stuff squared away in the last year instead of waiting until the next winter creeps up.. after all, Waterman has already seen a dusting of snow. :)

Most states do annual lift inspections in the fall. I don't know about California specifically, however.

Well basically Matt and the crew have rebuilt the lifts electrical systems to comply with codes and installed new comlines. This has been a lengthy process with some timing setbacks along the way that have resulted in postponments of the load test but the state seems to be working with them to get it done so it can open this year. So cross your fingers and pray for snow!

Yesterday was Day 1 of the Load Test, all is going well with some issues to correct I guess. They will be continuing today and it looks like Waterman will be up and running this year.

Another note is that the Angeles National Forest was closed yesterday due to critical fire danger. The roads remain open but you cannot stop for any reason and participate in any form of recreation. Newcomb's Ranch remains open due to being on private property.

This is all good news for us Waterman guys. But when are we going to get the snow phone back? I sure would like to here "It's a beautiful day at MT. Waterman"

Hey Steve, how ya doing? Sarah still loves to watch your Window casts. See ya when the snow falls

Russell!

What's Up? Long time no see. Foot of snow predicted this weekend so hopefully that will get the base rolling. Hopefully a good and long successful season at Waterman to get some cash flow going to get Kratka fixed up for next year. Probably going to open it this year for tubing which could be huge profits toward the cause.

What became of Mt. Waterman and Kratka Ridge/Snowcrest in the San Bernadino Mountains north of L.A.? I was working on some stuff last night and discovered that the websites for both are dead. Are they still in operation, or have they become Lost Ski Areas?

We are open now! They have new owner/oinvestors and they have renovated and improved the place as well. I will be out there 12/15/2007 to help with the new patrol room move. I will report back on what is new and wonderful. I hope the snow won't melt off by then. More of a patrol trip to do my duties that always are more than skiing around to help the injured. Carol

I hope the snow won't melt off by then.
What snow? There has been nothing at ski area elevations; Nov. 30 was all rain.

Nonetheless the news is good and hopefully I will get a chance to check Waterman out by February.

Well, Not Open Yet!

But the final fix it's are done and permits are in the mail. NOAA is now calling for up to 2 feet of snow in the higher elevations of the Southern California mountains this week. Who knows? Maybe open by Sunday!

The snow that is forcast and that may accumulate by 12/15/07. See Tom's post below! Aren't you the one that said it would not snow in Mammoth and we got a foot an hour? If I had not had my snow claw..............! Your car would not move, Mr. no-snow man!

The storm has passed L.A.: It was all rain in the mountains last night and the areas are currently closed. If it moves out slowly Big Bear might see some snow later today.

Yep! Looks like the curse of Southern California remains for yet another year as the storms miss us and leave only rain. Hopefully the one forecasted for next weekend will find its way here.
